Man injured after jumping in tiger den at Bronx Zoo

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- A man is in critical but stable condition after apparently jumping from a monorail into the tiger den at the Bronx Zoo.

Bronx Zoo officials expressed relief that the 400-pound tiger spared the man's life.

"I think it's safe to say if he wanted to do harm he would have," said Jim Breheny, Bronx Zoo Director.

The 11-year-old Siberian tiger they call "Bachuta" did bite 25-year-old David Villalobos several times.

It left him with multiple puncture wounds on his arms, legs, shoulders and back and he also sustained a broken ankle and arm.

"He made a deliberate attempt to get over the fence, this wasn't an accident," Breheny said.

At about 3 p.m. Friday, officials say Villalobos was on the zoo's Wild Asia monorail in the last car by himself.

Then at the tiger exhibit, he jumped 17 feet and cleared the fences.

For 10 minutes, the 25-year-old was on the ground in the pen with the tiger until zoo emergency teams and the NYPD could get to the exhibit and with a fire extinguisher distract the tiger.

While officials know what happened they are still trying to determine why it happened.

Why did Villalobos do it? Was it a suicide attempt?

At his family's home in Mahopac his sister refused to go on camera and neighbors are grasping for answers as well.

The tiger is expected to be back in the exhibit perhaps as early as Saturday.

Villalobos will remain hospitalized at Jacobi Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition.

Zoo officials say the outcome come could have been dramatically different.

"We did not have to use deadly force but we were prepared to if we had to," Breheny said.

Police searching for cell phone bandit in Bronx

BEDFORD PARK (WABC) -- Seven women, most of whom are young, report they have been followed by the same man in the same neighborhood.

On Saturday, police warned women to be on their guard while they searched for the bandit.

For the past three weeks, police believe the suspect has been on a one-man rampage stealing phones and purses from unsuspecting women in the Bedford Park section of the Bronx.

Eyewitness News is told he follows the victims into their buildings, then grabs and runs. He is described as strong and fast, but not quick enough to elude surveillance cameras.

The robberies have taken place at all hours - some late at night, one in broad daylight at noon. The robber is not concerned about the time of day, as he looks to do something quick and easy to steal.

Cop accidentally kills store worker in Bronx standoff

By Bill King and Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- A Bronx deli employee is dead, apparently shot by police, and three men who were holed up inside the store are under arrest.

The incident began with a grocery store robbery on East 169th Street and Franklin Avenue in the Morrisania section around 2 a.m. Friday. It ended with the three suspects being taken into custody by 6:30 a.m.

Authorities say the Natalie Grocery Store had just closed for the night when a passerby spotted a masked man pointing a gun at a clerk's head inside and called police, who quickly responded and surrounded the building.

Police say two of the suspects, identified as Orlando Ramos and Ernesto Delgado, saw the police presence and fled to the back of the store and into the basement.

That allowed the night manager to open the metal gate in front of the store and sneak out, walking towards officers with his hands raised. Another employee, identified as 20-year-old Reynaldo Cuevas and also the store owner's nephew, then followed. But in his haste to escape the suspects, police say he ran directly into a police officer. They became entangled, according to NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, and the officer's gun discharged into Cuevas' chest.

He rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Witness Jose Garcia told Eyewitness News that Cuevas was running and didn't put his hands up.

"The there people that were robbing the store, they ran to the back," he said. "So that's when the guy got up from the floor, opened the gate, came up with his hands up. His nephew, who was working with him that night, he was trying to follow him. But he ran, but he didn't put his hands up. That's when the police, he fell, and police shot him."

Eyewitness News spoke to a woman who said she was in the store moments before the situation unfolded. She said she did not notice a robbery in progress, but was across the street when she heard all the commotion.

"We came out the building, got across the street," she said. "Once we got across the street, on 169 and Franklin, we heard a gunshot. The cops was already flooded around the store. The boy dropped. When I turned around, the boy dropped."

Police say the third suspect, identified as Christopher Dorsey, followed the employees outside and surrendered. The other two holed up inside, sparking the standoff as police attempted to determine if the suspects were alone in the store or if they had a hostage.

Delgado surrenderd four hours later around 5:30 a.m, according to police. Afte that, officers entered the store around 6:30 a.m. and arrested Ramos, who they found tied to a pole in the basement, allegedly pretending to be a victim.

Authorities say an unloaded .32-caliber handgun was found in bags of birdseed on the grocery store shelves. A backpack belonging to one of the suspects was also recovered. Police say it contained $718, packs of Newport cigarettes and scratch-off lottery tickets.

Demonstrators took to the street Friday night and aimed their anger at police as they claimed the corner of the Bronx and lifted candles to the sky in memory of 20-year-old Reynaldo Cuevas.

Fernando Mateo spoke with Cuevas' mother.

"She's in a state of shock. She believes her son was murdered," said Fernando Mateo, of the Bodega Association of the United Station.

Police say it was an accident, and they have released video to support their case.

Cuevas collided with the cop on his way out of the store. The cop had drawn his gun and it fired.

"The two became entangled at which point we believe the officer accidentally discharged his weapon with one round accidentally entering Mr. Cuevas' shoulder," New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

That explanation has not satisfied those who knew Cuevas like Maricela Rodriguez.

"He was like a son to me," Rodriguez said.

Late in the day, police slapped the three robbery suspects with numerous charges including second degree murder.

Meanwhile, an officer was seriously injured when he was involved in an accident while responding to the scene.

Arrest made in 1998 Bronx murder case

See it on TV? Check here. NEW YORK (WABC) -- In February 1998, police found a woman unconscious at 2314 Valentine Avenue. The Medical Examiner's office later deemed her death a homicide due to strangulation.

It was also determined that the victim was sexually assaulted.

Until April 1998, the victim remained unidentified. However, through dental records, she was able to be identified as 14-year-old Marleny Cruz.

Until September 2011, the case remained unresolved. Detective Malcolm Reiman of the Bronx Homicide Task force requested a DNA profile of the evidence that was recovered from the victim. Later in December, it was discovered that the DNA profile matched 40-year-old James Martin, who was incarcerated in the Somerset Correctional Facility in Pennsylvania for the 2005 homicide of his common law wife. He had also served time as a teenager for murdering his friend to steal his Air Jordan sneakers.

On Wednesday, the suspect was extradited to New York and charged.

Marleny Cruz was a runaway who had been through several foster homes. Her body was unclaimed for months, and another family actually had a wake for her before learning she was not their daughter.

Marleny Cruz had been living in foster homes since her mother died. Police say she ran away multiple times, and did drugs and worked as a prostitute before being killed. After her death, the NYPD started a special program to find young teenage prostitutes and get them off the streets.

Funeral Friday for Bronx River Parkway crash victims

Eyewitness NewsBRONX (WABC) -- Hundreds of people gathered in the Bronx Friday to bid a final farewell to three generations of one family. The seven family members were killed when their SUV plunged from the Bronx River Parkway on to the grounds of the Bronx Zoo.

Seven hearses - one for each of the victims - pulled up to the old brick church.

The hearses - two white and five black - arrived at the Church of St. Raymond, where 10 children in blue school uniforms stood in a straight line on the steps. A white limousine covered in paper signs with the names of the dead also drove up to the church, located behind a small cemetery. Several Fordham University vans unloaded mourners. Two of the victims worked in the custodial department of the school.

Killed in Sunday's wreck were Jacob Nunez and Ana Julia Martinez, who were visiting from the Dominican Republic community of Manuel Bueno; their daughters, Maria Gonzalez and Maria Nunez, and three grandchildren.

The children were Jocelyn Gonzalez, 10, the daughter of the driver, and Niely Rosario, 7, and Marly Rosario, 3, both daughters of Nunez.

Police say Maria Gonzalez, the driver of the SUV, clipped a highway divider and damaged a tire before the vehicle flew off a highway and plummeted six stories into a ravine.

More than 1,000 mourners streamed into a Bronx funeral home Thursday to pay their respects at a wake for the victims. The line stretched down Unionport Road and around the corner onto Odell Street. The driver's son's fraternity has raised more than $110,000 for the family.

"It hurts a lot to know that I used to be friends with her, and now she's not here anymore," friend Chelsea Pererya said. "It's hard."

With so many dead, there were countless goodbyes to say. The line outside the Parkchester Funeral Home stretched for blocks and lasted for hours before the mourners finally reached the seven coffins inside.

"We're here today," one mourner said. "We don't know tomorrow."

Pereyra was a close friend to Jocelyn Gonzalez.

"We used to be at the same table together," she said. "It was very sad to know that she's not here with us anymore."

The three girls and their mothers will be buried in the Bronx. The bodies of the grandparents will be flown back to the Dominican Republic.

7 dead in Bronx River Parkway crash

BRONX (WABC) -- An out-of-control van careered across several lanes of traffic on a New York City highway overpass Sunday, then plunged more than 50 feet off the side of the road and landed in a ravine on the grounds of the Bronx Zoo, killing all seven people aboard, including three children.

Police identified the dead adults as 85-year-old Jacob Nunez and 81-year-old Ana Julia Martinez, both from the Dominican Republic, and their daughters, 45-year-old Maria Gonzalez, and 39-year-old Maria Nunez, both from the Bronx. Police say Gonzalez was driving. The children were identified as 10-year-old Jocelyn Gonzalez, the daughter of the driver, and 7-year-old Niely Rosario and 3-year-old Marly Rosario, both daughters of Nunez.

In one horrific moment, their Honda Pilot went from the family car to a mass coffin.

All 7 victims inside suffered the same last breath together.

12:30 Sunday afternoon, when many families are on the road, somehow the SUV lost control, bounced off the barrier, screamed across the southbound lanes of the Bronx River Parkway and kept going...right over the guardrail.

Experts believe it flew another 75 feet in the air before it began the sickening, fatal plunge: a fast free fall about 60 feet down into a wooded section of the Bronx Zoo.

Thankfully, it is a remote area where visitors are not allowed and where there are no animals.

Even the most experienced emergency crews who raced to the scene were shaken by what they found inside.

"Sometimes you come across events that are horrific," said FDNY Deputy Chief Ronald Werner. "And this was one of them."

"Everybody was taken back by it because everybody has a relative," said FDNY Deputy Chief Howard Sickles.

"Everybody knows a child, everybody has a grandparent. And you can see the emotion on everybody. It's very upsetting."

This is the family portrait rescue workers carried from the wreckage:

An elderly man and woman in their 80's, a 45 year old female in the driver's seat, a 39 year old female and 3 young girls, ages 10, 7 and 3.

Officials say all the victims were buckled in which explains why their bodies were not thrown from the Honda.

But crews did check the surrounding area just in case there were more passengers.

In the end, the medical examiner needed a caravan to remove all the victims.

It was a bitter procession followed by the crumpled pieces of the car.

As accident investigators try to find out why and how Maria Gonzalez lost control, one family is left mourning 3 generations of their own.

"Obviously the vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed," said Werner. "It hit something that caused it to become airborne. It travelled over the railing and a distance of maybe 75-80 feet before it came down and hit the ground."

The vehicle lay mangled hours later, its right doors ripped off and strewn amid the trees along with items from the car. Next to the heavily wooded area are subway tracks and a train yard.

The southbound side of the highway was closed briefly Sunday afternoon while police investigated but later reopened.

The medical examiner's office said it expected to release the victims' causes of death on Monday.

The accident was the second in the past year where a car fell off the same stretch of the Bronx River Parkway. Last June, the driver of an SUV heading north lost control and the SUV hit a divider, bounced through two lanes of traffic and fell 20 feet over a guardrail, landing on a pickup truck in a parking lot. The two people in the SUV were injured.

City agencies will be asked to look at safety issues on the highway including guardrail height, Bronx borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said in a statement Sunday.

"My prayers, as well as those of my office and all Bronxites, go out to the families of the seven victims," he said.

The wreck was the deadliest in New York City since the driver of a tour bus returning from a Connecticut casino in March 2011 lost control and slammed into a pole that sheared the bus nearly end to end, killing 14 passengers.

In 2009, just north of New York City in suburban Westchester County, a woman carrying a vanload of children drove nearly two miles in the wrong direction on a highway before colliding with an SUV. Eight people were killed, including four children.

An autopsy determined that the woman, Diane Schuler, had downed at least 10 drinks and had smoked marijuana as recently as 15 minutes before the wreck.

Memorial grows for slain Bronx teen

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- There were a lot of tears and emotions at a growing memorial Monday night for a teenager gunned down in the streets of New York.

It began as a night of fun with friends, but it turned deadly in an instant, and seemingly for no reason at all.

There is still no arrest in this senseless killing.

While police search for the gunman, the memorial outside the victim's apartment is growing.

The candles at the memorial spell his name, Kurt.

The 17-year-old high school senior, Kurt Lawrence, was fatally shot early Saturday morning.

He was an honor roll student who poured all his passion into football.

Kurt was hoping for a college scholarship to pull him out of the South Bronx and into the pros except a bullet to the chest put an end to all that.

For the Lawrence family, the tragedy rips open painful wounds.

Seven years ago, Kurt's older brother J.J. was gunned down a block from the house.

His father passed from an illness two years ago.

And now Kurt leaves behind a grieving single mother and three sisters.

The victim was at a party this weekend.

At around 2 in the morning, Kurt and his friends stepped outside for a moment.

Police say that's when another group of men approached.

Eyewitness News is told that no words were ever exchanged, just the sound of gunfire.

Gun buyback program in the Bronx Saturday

Eyewitness NewsBRONX (WABC) -- Law enforcement and three Bronx churches joined forces to sponsor a gun buyback program for one day only on Saturday.

Participants in the gun buyback received a $200 pre-paid cash card for each eligible weapon that was surrendered, no questions asked, in the Bronx.

Three-hundred and fifty-four guns were surrendered in the cash-for-guns exchange, officials said. The weapons included one Uzi submachine gun, one Tec-9 and one Tec-22 semi-automatic, four AK-47 style assault weapons and six sawed-off shotguns among 161 revolvers, 112 semi-automatics, nine shotguns, 16 rifles, and 46 BB and zip guns.

"Programs like the gun buyback have real, quantifiable results," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. "Since this program started in 2008, it has been responsible for taking over 6,000 guns off the street of the five boroughs. Our hope is that [the] gun buyback in the Bronx builds on this success and results in even more guns off the street, and more innocent lives saved."

Plainclothes NYPD officers, Bronx DA Detective Investigators and members of the NYPD Bronx DA Squad were on hand at the churches to accept the firearms that were surrendered. Participants were encouraged to bring the weapons in paper bags, plastic bags or shoe boxes.

Citizens who want to turn in weapons can do so anonymously at police stations citywide every day of the week and receive $100. In addition, the Department's Operation Gun Stop program (1-866-GUN-STOP) rewards individuals up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest of an individual who is carrying, selling or using guns illegally.

Young mother shot and killed in the Bronx

Web produced by Bob Monek, Eyewitness NewsTREMONT (WABC) -- Police in the Bronx are searching for the gunman who shot and killed a young mother with her child at her side.

"I don't know anybody in the world that would want to hurt this girl," her husband, Juba Lassiter, said.

Claudia Millan , 29, was walking with her 2-year-old son, Jamir, on Park Avenue Sunday night.

Around 9:30, she stopped to talk to her neighbor, Michael. A half-hour later, he heard a gunshot and ran outside to see what happened.

He said she was on the ground, shot in the face.

"After I heard the shot, I cam over here and I seen the little kid bleeding over his mother," Michael Escobar said. "He was down on his knees with her, trying to hold her."

The father of two of their young children said he is physically ill over what happened.

Lassiter said he and Claudia were married seven years. He was visiting Pennsylvania with his sister when the shooting happened.

"He loves his mom. They all love their mom. Before anything comes their mom. Now, what am I supposed to tell them?" he said.

"Jamir does reenact what happened. He does put something to his face exactly where his mother's wounds was, because I did go to the morgue to see her. He keeps asking for her. He is really devastated right now," Clarissa Lawson, the victim's sister-in-law, said.

Lighting candles and filled with grief, family members and friends are trying to comprehend that she is gone and that someone would do this.

"That's how they live life. By doing wrong and by hurting people and by taking people away from their family because they have nothing to live for," Lassiter said.

Eyewitness NewsBRONX (WABC) -- A man was arrested for allegedly selling makeshift pipe bombs from his car in a Bronx parking lot, and authorities searched his Bridgeport apartment overnight.

Police say the 37-year-old man was arrested after selling undercover officers eight crude pipe bombs from his white Subaru, parked at a Co-Op City shopping center Thursday afternoon.

The makeshift bombs were reportedly made of aluminum and apparently filled with potassium perchlorate, with fuses attached.

The man was taken into custody. Authorities believe he was acting on his own.

Investigators learned he had an apartment on Riverview Drive in Bridgeport.

During the ensuing search, a Connecticut State Trooper sustained a minor injury when one of his makeshift pipe bombs flashed over.

Riverview Drive was closed for one block as federal authorities searched the apartment.
