Woman arrested for spray-painting 'Jihad' subway ad

  Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK -- An Egyptian-born U.S. columnist was arrested Tuesday for spray-painting an advertisement equating Muslim radicals with savages at a New York City subway station.

Mona Eltahawy, 45, of New York, was arrested on charges including criminal mischief and making graffiti, police said. Her arrest was captured on video by a New York Post camera crew and posted online.

Eltahawy is a women's rights defender and lecturer on the role of social media in the Arab world. She calls herself a liberal Muslim who's spoken publicly against violent Islamic groups. She's seen in the video spraying pink paint on the ad while another woman tries to block her.

"This is non-violent protest, see this America" Eltahawy said in the video as police officers were arresting her. "I'm an Egyptian-American and I refuse hate."

Eltahawy hasn't returned a phone message seeking comment on her arrest.

The ads - reading, "In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat Jihad." - went up in 10 stations across Manhattan after a court victory by a conservative commentator who once headed a campaign against an Islamic center near the World Trade Center site.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York initially refused to run blogger Pamela Geller's ad, saying it was "demeaning." But a federal judge ruled in July that it is protected speech under the First Amendment.

Geller, executive director of the American Freedom Defense Initiative and publisher of a blog called Atlas Shrugs, has said she's not concerned that her ad could spark protests like the ones against the depiction of Muslims in the video "Innocence of Muslims." Violence linked to the movie has left dozens in seven countries dead, including the American ambassador to Libya.

The ad was plastered on San Francisco city buses in recent weeks, prompting some people to deface the ads and remove some of the words, including "Jihad," or holy war.

Geller said the subway ads cost about $6,000. The MTA said they will be up for a month.

Blasting resumes Friday for 2nd Ave Subway

  Alexis Wood, Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- Blast work resumes on the 2nd Avenue Subway Friday for the first time since an explosion damaged property last month.

An MTA investigation found a wrong timing sequence and improper blast holes caused the excessive explosion at the 72nd Street construction site.

The agency has initiated new safety procedures, including requiring a superintendent to approve a checklist before each blast.

A double layer of protective mats will also now be used in the shafts.

3 people stabbed at Jamaica subway station

  Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- Three people were stabbed at a subway station in the Jamaica section of Queens Wednesday morning.

Police say the victims, two men and one woman, were slashed at the Sutphin Boulevard/Archer Avenue station just before 9 a.m.

The incident apparently began as a dispute on a J train that continued when they exited. The attack happened on the escalator heading up to the street level.

The victims, identified as 24-year-old Princess Llsop, 34-year-old Antoine Roddy and 42-year-old Andres Nova, were rushed to Jamaica Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities sayLlsop and Roddy are a couple and were the people involved in the dispute with the suspect, 25-year-old Dina Saint-Fleur. Nova was a bystander on the escalator who fell during the commotion. It was unclear if he was slashed at all.

Saint-Fleur, who may be emotionally disturbed, was taken into custody.

E and J subway trains were bypassing the Sutphin/Archer station in both directions due to the police investigation.

Smoke condition forces subway station evacuation

  Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- The MTA says a smoke condition started in the train tunnel between the Bowery and Essex Street Stations along Delancey Street on the Lower East Side.

Fire Department says there were two trains impacted between two stations, Bowery and Essex Street.

Both trains were able to get to a station and the passengers got out at those stations.

A lower Manhattan-bound J train with 350 passengers and a Queens-bound M train with 200 riders had to back up to Essex Street to let people out. The MTA says that took about 18 minutes.

No injuries were reported.

The smoke condition started at 2:52 p.m. The MTA says a wall mounted electrical box between Bowery and Essex Stations caught fire.

The box feeds the third rail for the J and M trains. It caused smoke in tunnel.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze without issue.

After earlier suspensions and delays, service is operating normally.

Scout Willis caught drinking with fake ID in subway

  Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- New York City police say 20-year-old Scout Willis, the daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, was arrested for drinking a beer in the Union Square subway station Monday night.

Authorities say that when Willis was stopped by police at around 6:50 p.m., she gave officers a New York State ID with the name Katherine Kelly.

After further questioning, she gave the officers her real identification, a California ID with the name Scout Willis.

She reportedly told the officers, according to the criminal complaint, "My name is Scout Willis. The first ID isn't mine. My friend gave it to me. I don't know Katherine Kelly."

Willis was released on her own recognizance and told to return to court on July 31.

She is charged with criminal impersonation and consumption of alcohol in a public place.

Crime statistics show subway felonies on the rise

  Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- Riding the subway appears to be getting more dangerous in New York City. The MTA on Monday reported a sharp rise in thefts over the past year.

According to the NYPD, the recent crime statistics show that crime on the subway is up. We haven't seen a level like this since 2005.

The news is both frightening and sobering.

The statistics, released Monday morning at an MTA subcommittee meeting, show that a lot of the increases involve stolen electronics. There has been an 11 percent increase felonies in April when compared to April of 2011. In addition, so far this year, there has been a 15.3 percent increase in felony crimes, also compared to 2011.

They are stunning numbers in a city in which overall crime is down.

NYPD Chief Joseph Fox says most of the increase is from the theft of iPads, iPods, iPhones and iTouches. He says the criminals target sleeping passengers.

Police recently busted a man with 21 prior arrests in the act.

"He was going through the victim's pockets when the officers immediately moved in to arrest him," Fox said. "And upon a search after the arrest, he was found to be in possession of four razor blades, as well as an iPhone, credit cards and an iTouch."

Another suspect with more than 40 prior arrests was also taken into custody.

MTA officials want to track the suspects so they can see how they are dealt with in court.

Police look for suspects in violet subway assault

  Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- The search is on for as many as 12 teenage girls wanted in a brutal and violent attack that started on a subway train.

The teens, ranging in age from 15 to 18, assaulted two 16-year-old girls aboard a No. 4 train in the Bronx.

After stealing another girl's french fries, the teens allegedly pulled the victims off the train by their hair.

Police say the suspects also stole a cell phone.

Jury to weigh fate of accused subway bomb plotter

A jury will begin deliberations in the trial of Adis Medunjanin, charged with plotting to bomb New York City subways.

  Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- A jury in Brooklyn is expected to begin deliberations Monday in the case of a man accused of a 2009 subway bombing plot.

Closing arguments came Thursday in the trial of Adis Medunjanin.

A prosecutor told jurors that a U.S. citizen went to Pakistan in 2008 with two others determined to kill American troops in Afghanistan, but a defense lawyer said the men were "immature, na?ve and clueless" and easily manipulated by both al-Qaida and U.S. investigators.

Both versions of Adis Medunjanin's trip abroad were offered before a federal jury in Brooklyn begins deliberating the fate of the Bosnian-born Muslim who became a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Medunjanin is charged with nine crimes, including conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction and conspiring to provide material support to al-Qaida by prosecutors who say he returned to New York weeks after he left to begin planning a martyrdom operation to set off explosives in the city's subway.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Berit Berger said Medunjanin and the other two men quickly ditched their original plan to fight for the Taliban against Americans in Afghanistan when they connected with al-Qaida operatives in Pakistan who wanted them to return to America on a terrorism mission.

"This is Terrorism 101," she said. "The goal of this conspiracy was to kill as many people as possible."

Medunjanin has pleaded not guilty to charges he became an al-Qaida operative who discussed bombing movie theaters, Grand Central Terminal, Times Square and the New York Stock Exchange before settling on the city's subways.

The defense has argued that federal agents unfairly coerced Medunjanin into making incriminating statements after they intimidated his family.

The prosecution's case "brought to the surface the worst fears about our future ... A plot to bomb subways," but is not as clear-cut as the government claims, defense lawyer Robert Gottlieb told jurors.

Medunjanin traveled to Pakistan in 2008 with Najubullah Zazi and Zarein Ahmedzay. Zazi and Ahmedzay both pleaded guilty and cooperated against him.

Gottlieb called his client and the two other men "immature, na?ve and clueless" when they set out for Afghanistan to fulfill some "romantic version of jihad. ... His plan and intent was to join the Taliban and stand up for what he believes in. That was his purpose."

Zazi, who testified as a government witness, learned about explosives at an al-Qaida training camp in Pakistan. Berger showed the jury pictures of a rocket propelled grenade and a bazooka, saying the defendant won a special lottery to shoot a bazooka.

She said al-Qaida leaders told them that "if you can't make a bomb, make something smaller" because in other missions, "people have failed because they tried to do something big and ended up not doing anything."

Medunjanin returned to New York, where he studied and worked as a doorman in a Manhattan building, in September 2008 while the other two came back the following January.

Zarein returned to his family in Queens while Zazi went to Colorado.

Zarein testified that the three agreed the New York subways would be a good target.

Berger said Zazi assembled a bomb out of household products in a Colorado hotel room before driving across America, arriving in New York on Sept. 10, 2009. She said the men realized they were being followed by law enforcement so Zazi dumped his bomb ingredients into a mosque toilet and flew back to Colorado.

Berger said Medunjanin loved Osama bin Laden more than himself - a claim the defense contested.

The prosecutor said the defendant was so frustrated that he could not carry out his suicide mission with the others that he finally got in his car on Jan. 7, 2010, and decided to crash it and kill other motorists. She said Medunjanin was speeding down the Whitestone Expressway at more than 90 mph when he wrecked.

"He was hoping to die and in the process to kill as many people as he could," she said, adding that the air bags in his car kept him from getting even a scratch and no other motorists were injured.

She played for the jury a 911 call the defendant made from his cellphone as he drove. He could be heard shouting: "We love ... We love death!"

Police hunt for suspects in Bronx subway stabbing

BRONX (WABC) -- Police are searching for two suspects in connection with the stabbing of a man early Saturday morning at a Bronx subway station.

The victim of the stabbing is in critical but stable condition at St. Barnabas hospital.

The incident happened in the Fordham section of the Bronx.

Police have released security camera of the two suspets they're looking for.

It shows a man and woman in an apartment building in the Bronx, shortly after the assault on the platform of the number 4 train.

Police say a 19 year old man was stabbed at least six times after confronting a man who stole his smartphone.

According to investigators, the victim and a friend were riding the train just before 4 a.m., when they fell asleep.

The victim woke up and noticed that his pocket had been slashed and his phone, gone.

He then spotted a man with his phone on the train car.

They all got off, and the victim confronted the suspect, who in turn, pulled out a knife.

The victim's friend ran for help.

When he came back to the platform, his buddy had been stabbed in his head, neck, chest and torso.

In surveillance video from another nearby store, detectives are seen arriving to the scene just minutes after the stabbing.

The victim left a trail of blood down three levels of the station, from the platform to the landing near the token booth, and all the way down the stairs to the exit on Fordham.

Number 4 trains were bypassing the Fordham Road Station while police investigated.

The suspect was with a woman on the train.

He was wearing a baseball hat with the letters "LA" on it.

Police have been looking through surveillance video from the subway and nearby stores to track him down.

Subway riders face 2nd night of 'fast track' repairs

NEW YORK (WABC) -- It is a subway maintenance blitz like we have not seen before. It goes far beyond cosmetic improvements.

Packing their tools and ready to work, 700 strong MTA workers began one of its most ambitious maintenance programs. Fast Track, they call it, focusing on 300 projects in a four night blitz -- 4-5 and 6 trains shut down for 7 hours.

"Certainly, it's going to impact customers and we understand that. But in the long run, we think it is better for them and better us that we get this work done. And our employees can work in a very safe environment," NYC Transit President Thomas Prendergast said.

Of the jobs completed the first night on their punch list: 320 third rail defects were corrected; they cleaned and scraped 5,000 feet of track, 34 of 63 signals were inspected; four switches were serviced; 15 stations were cleaned. Some power washed.

Many were painted like the 23 Street Station, where they added light fixtures and re-lamped.

No major complaints from riders so far. Iris Gonzalez responded on the Eyewitness News Facebook page: "I'm so glad I'm retired!!!" Awilda Fonseca says she had to change her way home, "but I took the E and managed to get home about the same time."

By five o'clock in the morning Tuesday, the trains were back in service.

The next Fast Track affects the 7th Avenue 1-2-3 lines February 13 thru 17.

Work on the 6th Avenue B-D-F occurs February 27 thru March 2nd.

The 8th Avenue A-C-E lines will be shut down March 12 thru 16.

MTA plans overnight 'fasttrack' subway repairs

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The MTA is launching a bold subway repair plan. Instead of doing the work on the weekends, it is conducting repairs overnight. Major lines will be shut down, starting Monday night with the Lexington Avenue line.

The MTA is planning to knock out a lot of projects, from track maintenance to spot painting to power washing. They will also be repairing wall tiles, platforms and lighting. They are calling the series of repairs "Fasttrack," and they hope that straphangers will just grit their teeth and bear it.

Starting Monday, the 4, 5 and 6 lines will close from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m., and will do that every night through Friday.

The MTA says this will allow crews to safely and quickly handle more than 300 repair jobs along 27 miles of track. But it will add at least 20 minutes to the average ride.

The closures will stretch from Grand Central Terminal to Atlantic Avenue. The 1, 2 and 3 lines from 34th Street to Atlantic Avenue will be next up, closing overnights from February 13 to February 17. The Sixth Avenue line, parts of the B, D, F and M from 59th Street to 4th Street, will be under repair in late February.

And the A, C and E lines will have overnight work in mid-March from 59th Street to Jay Street.

There will be conductors and traffic checkers at subway stations Monday to answer commuters' questions.

No pants subway prank in 11th year

  Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- If you spotted someone on the subway Sunday without their pants on, chances are it wasn't a coincidence.

Improv Everywhere threw its 11th annual "No Pants Subway Ride".

Participants gathered at six meeting points to pull off the prank.

The idea is to see how other straphangers react to people riding the train in the middle of winter in their underwear.

Maintenance was scaled back over the Christmas and New Year holiday, but it returns this weekend.

Subway conductor accused of punching passenger

  Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK -- A New York City subway conductor is accused of punching a teenage passenger in the face after the two got into an argument.

Authorities say conductor Thomas Christopher was arrested following the altercation on the southbound R train near or at the 36th Street stop in Queens. The conductor was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor assault.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says the 35-year-old employee has worked with the agency since 2007.

The MTA said it did not immediately have further details on the employee's background or the incident.

Police say it was about 3:50 a.m. Sunday when Christopher and an 18-year-old male got into an argument, which then turned physical.

Search for suspect in subway assault

UPPER EAST SIDE (WABC) -- Police are trying to identify a suspect wanted for assaulting a man on a subway platform earlier this month on the Upper East Side.

The attack happened at 4:00 on the morning of December 11, 2011 on the southbound platform of the 6 train at 77th Street and Lexington Avenue.

The suspect was on the northbound platform, but then crossed the track bed after getting into a stare down with the 31-year-old male victim.

The victim was struck in the face. He was taken to Colombia Presbyterian Hospital with a laceration to his head and bleeding to his brain.

The suspect is described as a 30 to 40 year old black man, around six feet tall and 200 pounds. His picture was captured by a surveillance camera.

Groping suspect shot by officer on subway

  Eyewitness NewsHARLEM (WABC) -- An off duty police officer shot a groping suspect during a struggle on a subway platform in Harlem on Friday afternoon.

Authorities said the man was identified by two women as a groper who assaulted them in a Harlem subway platform.

The off duty NYPD officer, a 19 year veteran assigned to transit, first talked to a teenager who was with her mother when she said she was groped. A second woman then also told the officer she had also been groped, and the officer told the teen's mother to call 911.

Officials said the off duty officer then approached the alleged groper, identified himself as NYPD,and the confrontation followed.

In the struggle, the officer's gun discharged, striking the man once.

He was taken to Harlem Hospital and expected to survive.

Police say the 22 year old man has 20 prior arrests.

The officer was not injured and police believe he happened to be at the right place at the right time.

One bullet was recovered at the scene, believed to be the officer's, as was a folding knife on the tracks that may belong to the suspect.

Woman faints from heat, struck by subway

  Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsUPPER EAST SIDE (WABC) -- A 21-year-old woman was struck and killed when she became overcome by the heat and fainted onto the subway tracks.

It happened Wednesday afternoon after 3 at the 77th Street at Lexington Avenue station on the Upper East Side.

Fatoumata Diallo of the Bronx apparently fainted and was hit by a number 6 train.

Weekend work on No. 7 subway line

  Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- The No. 7 train will be disrupted this weekend as the MTA deals with increased signal-related delays.

Recent delays have been caused by an aging signal system and water related issues in the East River tunnels.

Work is being done that will eventually eliminate some of the delays.

But from May 20 to May 23, there will be no subway service between Times Square and Queensboro Plaza on the 7 line.
