Funerals become sad routine after Newtown tragedy

AP  by DAVID KLEPPERNEWTOWN, Conn. -- A season that should be a time of joy has been marked by heart-wrenching loss in Newtown, as more victims from the massacre of 20 children and six adults are laid to rest.

At least nine funerals and wakes were held Wednesday for those who died when gunman Adam Lanza, armed with a military-style assault rifle, broke into Sandy Hook Elementary School Friday and opened fire. Lanza killed his mother at her home before the attack and committed suicide at the school as police closed in.

On Thursday, six funerals and five wakes were planned, and more tributes were scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

"The first few days, all you heard were helicopters," said Dr. Joseph Young, an optometrist who attended one funeral and would go to several more. "Now at my office all I hear is the rumble of motorcycle escorts and funeral processions going back and forth throughout the day."

At St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church on Wednesday, mourners arrived for Caroline Previdi, an auburn-haired 6-year-old with an impish smile, before the service had even ended for Daniel Barden, a 7-year-old who dreamed of being a firefighter.

"It's sad to see the little coffins," said the Rev. John Inserra, a Catholic priest who worked at St. Rose for years before transferring to a church in Greenwich.

"It's always hard to bury a child," Inserra said of the seemingly unrelenting cycle of sorrow and loss. "God didn't do this. God didn't allow this. We allowed it. He said, 'Send the little children to me.' But he didn't mean it this way."

Hundreds of firefighters formed a long blue line outside the church for Daniel's funeral. Two of his relatives work at the Fire Department of New York, and the gap-toothed redhead had wanted to join their ranks one day.

At Caroline's funeral, mourners wore pink ties and scarves - her favorite color - and remembered her as a New York Yankees fan who liked to kid around. "Silly Caroline" was how she was known to neighbor Karen Dryer.

"She's just a girl that was always smiling, always wanting others to smile," Dryer said.

Across town, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, hundreds gathered for the funeral of Charlotte Helen Bacon, many wearing buttons picturing the 6-year-old redhead. Speakers, including her grandfather, told of her love of wild animals, the family's golden retriever and the color pink.

She was "a beautiful little girl who could be a bit stubborn at times, just like all children," said Danbury resident Linda Clark as she left the service.

And in nearby Stratford, family and friends gathered to say goodbye to Victoria Soto, a first-grade teacher hailed as a hero for trying to shield her students, some of whom escaped. Musician Paul Simon, a family friend, performed "The Sound of Silence" at the service.

"She had the perfect job. She loved her job," said Vicky Ruiz, a friend since first grade.

In Woodbury, a line of colleagues, students and friends of slain Sandy Hook Principal Dawn Hochsprung, 47, wrapped around the block to pay their respects to the administrator, who rushed the gunman in an effort to stop him and paid with her life. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan attended the service.

"She loved kids. She'd do anything to help them and protect them," said Joann Opulski, of Roxbury.

The symbol of Christmas took on a new meaning in Newtown, where one memorial featured 26 Christmas trees - one for each victim at the school.

Edward Kish said he bought a Christmas tree two days before the shooting but hasn't had the heart to put it up or decorate it.

"I'll still put it up, probably," he said. "It doesn't seem right, and it doesn't seem like Christmas."

All LIE lanes reopened after deadly 35-vehicle crash

Eyewitness NewsUPTON (WABC) -- All lanes reopened on the Long Island Expressway Thursday morning following a deadly chain-reaction crash that shut down the highway in both directions for more than 15 hours.

Crews worked through the night to try to clean up what was left of the 35 vehicles involved in the accident, which happened just before 3 p.m. on an eastbound lane at exit 68 near Upton in Suffolk County.

The fiery crash killed one and injured more than two dozen people. Police say Raymond Simoneau, 42, of Rockingham, Vermont, was driving a tractor-trailer eastbound on the LIE when his vehicle struck a number of cars.

The initial collision led to several chain-reaction crashes involving 33 other vehicles.

The tractor-trailer, which was carrying storm debris, and two additional vehicles caught fire and were extinguished by fire department personnel.

A car involved in the initial collision with the tractor-trailer was incinerated beyond recognition, with its tires punctured and paint burned off its body. Some SUVs and cars suffered extensive damage while others appeared to have barely a scratch; all were haphazardly stopped across the highway, which is up to six lanes in parts.

A Blue Point woman, 68, was driving a Toyota Camry eastbound on the LIE when her vehicle was involved in the crash. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Approximately 33 people were injured and were transported to area hospitals, including Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in East Patchogue, Stony Brook University Hospital and St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson.

At least one of those injured, a 57-year-old man, is in serious condition.

The LIE was closed eastbound at exit 66 and westbound at exit 69. All lanes reopened just before 6 a.m.

The cause of the accident hadn't been determined, and no charges had been filed related to it. Investigators were working to sort out the sequence of events that led to the accident.

"Anybody rolling up on this scene you would think there would be definitely more than just one fatality," said John Mirando, chief of the Ridge Fire Department. "It's just lucky that it's only one, but it could have been a lot worse."

Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- New York City Marathon runners can receive a refund of their entry fee after this year's race was canceled because of Superstorm Sandy.

Officials said when the event was called off last month they had a no-refund policy but had not made a final decision on whether to make an exception. Organizer New York Road Runners informed entrants Thursday that they had three options to choose from - one of them a refund.

Below is the official release from the NYRR:

Option #1 - Refund. While NYRR has always had a no-refund policy for the Marathon, given these extraordinary circumstances, we are offering runners who were entered in the 2012 Marathon, and were unable to run due to the cancellation 1, the opportunity to obtain a full refund of their 2012 Marathon entry fee (excluding the $11 processing fee); OR

Option #2 - Guaranteed entry to the ING New York City Marathon for 2013, 2014, or 2015. Entrants in the 2012 Marathon who choose this option will be granted guaranteed entry to the Marathon for the year they choose. Runners will be required to pay all processing and entry fees at the time of application (in the given year), with fees maintained at the same rate as those paid in 2012; OR

Option #3 - Guaranteed entry to the NYC Half 2013. Entrants in the 2012 Marathon who choose this option will be granted guaranteed entry to the NYC Half 2013, to be run on March 17, 2013. Runners will be required to pay all processing and entry fees at the time of application. Availability will be limited.

More information about the options is available on ING NYC Marathon website at www.ingnycmarathon.org/resolution.htm

Navy commissions destroyer named after NY SEAL

Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- In a ceremony that was more joyful than solemn, the U.S. Navy on Saturday commissioned the USS Michael Murphy, a sleek new warship named for a Navy SEAL who died in Afghanistan at age 29.

Cannons boomed, dignitaries spoke of heroism, and nearly 300 sailors charged up a ramp while a band played "Anchors Aweigh" as the destroyer sprang to life in a ceremony in New York Harbor.

"You are now our family, our team," the ship's commander, Tom Shultz, told Murphy's parents, before leading hundreds of visitors in a SEAL battle cry.

"Hooyah, Michael Murphy!" Shultz said, pointing skyward.

Murphy, a Navy lieutenant who grew up in Patchogue, N.Y., was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during a 2005 ambush. Military officials said that after his four-man team was surrounded, Murphy risked exposure to enemy fire so he could radio a base for help.

The helicopter that rushed to the rescue was shot down, killing 16 sailors and soldiers. Murphy died on the battlefield. Only one man in his squad survived.

The 510-foot ship bearing his name was draped in red, white and blue banners and festooned with flags for Saturday's ceremony on a pier on Manhattan's west side.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said the ship would guarantee that Murphy's story would be retold. U.S. Rep. Peter King heralded the young sailor for "unbridled courage." U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer recounted stories of how Murphy, since he was a child, had empathy for others.

The $1.1 billion warship, built at the Bath Iron Works in Maine, is to be based in Hawaii.

Saddle Rock mayor attacked after village meeting

Eyewitness NewsSADDLE ROCK (WABC) -- Police on Long Island are investigating the an apparent politically-motivated assault involving the mayor of a small village.

Saddle Rock Mayor Dan Levy was reportedly attacked by a one-time candidate for public office inside the village hall following the monthly village meeting.

The incident follows a long-standing disagreement between the two, and things got out of control Wednesday night.

Police say 32-year-old Sasha Masri, who lost a race for village trustee last March, confronted Levy and hit him in the face with a set of keys. Authorities say he threw Levy into a bench, fracturing his left shoulder. Levy also suffered cuts to his face.

Masri, who left the scene, was arrested early Thursday morning. He reportedly had narcotics in his possession at the time of his arrest. He faces several charges, including assault and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Maksim Chmerkovskiy is leaving 'Dancing With The Stars' after 3 more seasons

Maksim Chmerkovskiy says he will leave ABC's "Dancing With The Stars" after three more seasons to pursue an acting career after competing on the series as a pro-dancer for more than six years.

The 32-year-old, who famously got into a heated argument with one of the show's judges in 2011, made the announcement on Thursday, September 20, saying on Twitter: "With nothing but love, gratitude and respect to all that played a part in that amazing aspect of my life."

UPDATE:: Chmerkovskiy is set to leave the show after three more seasons, his rep told OTRC.com. The next one, an "All-Stars" edition, premieres on Monday. He will compete with returning celebrity cast member and actress Kirstie Alley. ABC and BBC Worldwide Productions, which produce the series, declined to comment about Chmerkovskiy's future departure.

The dancer and choreographer, who was born in Ukraine when the territory was part of the Soviet Union, Tweeted a link to a New York Post interview that quotes him as saying he plans to leave "Dancing With The Stars" after his current contract expires at the end of 2013.

"What else do I have to do there after 15 seasons?" he told the newspaper, which dubbed him "Mad Max." "It makes total sense. The audience can't expect for me to want to stick around and the producers can't expect for me to want to stick around."

Chmerkovskiy told The New York Post that he secured a lead role in a major studio film, which beings production in January, and plans to concentrate on his acting career. He also says he may try to get his own reality show with his brother Val, who is also a "Dancing With The Stars" cast member.

In 2011, Chmerkovskiy starred in the Ukranian version of the reality show "The Bachelor" and currently hosts the game show "The Cube" in his native country. Chmerkovskiy made his U.S. acting debut on an episode of the comedy series "The Exes" in July.

Chmerkovskiy made his debut on "Dancing With The Stars in 2006 during season 2. During season 13 in October 2011, the pro-dancer made headlines after getting into a heated argument with Len Goodman, the most acerbic judge on the panel of three, who had criticized his routine with partner and soccer star Hope Solo. Backstage with co-host Brooke Charvet, Chmerkovskiy said: "With all due respect, this is my show. I help make it what it is."

He later told OTRC.com: "I've had it. I've had it a long time ago. I just kind of kept it cool but, look, she doesn't deserve it. That's all it is. Look, whatever helps the ratings. You're welcome show!"

In a 2012 memoir released in August, Solo accused Chmerkovskiy of being physically aggressive and verbally abusive towards her during their "Dancing With The Stars" rehearsals. She said he slapped her and then apologized and that producers offered her the chance to switch dance partners but that she ultimately declined, adding: "I didn't want to end Maks' career." Chmerkovskiy and reps for the series have not commented directly about her claims.

"I loved doing it," Chmerkovskiy said about his time of the show. "But to be honest with you, at 32, I am at what-about-me time. I am not thinking that with me leaving, the show will go off the air or anything. "Like my dad said, 'There are no irreplaceable people.' I wish them the next 50 years of success. But I have to do something else. I need to move on for me."

He is meanwhile continuing to rehearse for Monday's "Dancing With The Stars: All-Stars" premier with Alley, who Tweeted on Tuesday: "Our first dance is the Foxtrot..Gonna Trot that Fox all over that dance floor!!!!! Get On it!!!!"

Man injured after jumping in tiger den at Bronx Zoo

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- A man is in critical but stable condition after apparently jumping from a monorail into the tiger den at the Bronx Zoo.

Bronx Zoo officials expressed relief that the 400-pound tiger spared the man's life.

"I think it's safe to say if he wanted to do harm he would have," said Jim Breheny, Bronx Zoo Director.

The 11-year-old Siberian tiger they call "Bachuta" did bite 25-year-old David Villalobos several times.

It left him with multiple puncture wounds on his arms, legs, shoulders and back and he also sustained a broken ankle and arm.

"He made a deliberate attempt to get over the fence, this wasn't an accident," Breheny said.

At about 3 p.m. Friday, officials say Villalobos was on the zoo's Wild Asia monorail in the last car by himself.

Then at the tiger exhibit, he jumped 17 feet and cleared the fences.

For 10 minutes, the 25-year-old was on the ground in the pen with the tiger until zoo emergency teams and the NYPD could get to the exhibit and with a fire extinguisher distract the tiger.

While officials know what happened they are still trying to determine why it happened.

Why did Villalobos do it? Was it a suicide attempt?

At his family's home in Mahopac his sister refused to go on camera and neighbors are grasping for answers as well.

The tiger is expected to be back in the exhibit perhaps as early as Saturday.

Villalobos will remain hospitalized at Jacobi Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition.

Zoo officials say the outcome come could have been dramatically different.

"We did not have to use deadly force but we were prepared to if we had to," Breheny said.

Beloved Wantagh janitor fired after outburst

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsWANTAGH, N.Y. (WABC) -- A community is rallying behind an autistic janitor who was fired on Long Island.

Hundreds poured into a school board meeting demanding he be rehired.

The janitor was let go over an outburst.

He was apparently the subject of ongoing bullying and students say he simply lost it.

Mel Turner lost his job and with that he lost his connection with the community because he would not be allowed to attend any school related events, like the big homecoming game.

But, he didn't lose the love and support of the Wantagh community.

45-year-old Mel Turner remembers everyone's birthday, he just needs to hear it one time.

His autism gave him that talent, it's also meant he's been bullied his whole life.

In July, A group of kids cursed and teased him.

When he walked home that day, he saw a different group of kids and allegedly threatened to blow up the school.

Those kids recorded his outburst and turned the recording over to school officials who suspended and then fired him.

Hundreds crowded Thursday's school board meeting to stick up for Turner.

"He had a meltdown. He said horrific things. He said he's sorry. He just wants a second chance," said Patrick Ryder, Turner's friend and neighbor.

Mel is thankful for the love and support his neighbors gave him.

He really just wants his job back.

"I didn't mean what I said. I feel bad," Turner said, "I promise I will never say it again, and I need a second chance at my job."

The school district explained their hands were tied because there are clear rules about making threats and the safety of students.

Late Thursday night, the school board lifted the restriction on attending school events and said they would reconsider allowing Mel Turner to return to his job.

Man catches fire after applying sunscreen

Massachusetts Man Catches Fire After Applying Sunscreen (ABC News)A Massachusetts man said he suffered second-degree burns from a grill after applying sunscreen aerosol spray on parts of his body.

Brett Sigworth said he applied Banana Boat sunscreen to his body before walking over to his grill, not knowing it would still be flammable after it was on his skin.

"I went into complete panic mode and screamed," Sigworth said. "I've never experienced pain like that in my life."

The result was second-degree burns to his chest, ear and back, the only areas where he applied the sunscreen. Ten days after the incident, Sigworth is still showing the effects of the incident.

The warnings on the bottle of Banana Boat sunscreen read, "Flammable, don't use near heat, flame or while burning." But nothing about once it's applied.

Banana Boat officials said in a statement they were sorry to hear about Sigworth's experience and would begin a prompt investigation. "We are unaware of any prior incidents similar to what Brett has described, but because nothing is more important to us than the safety of our consumers, we are taking this matter very seriously," the statement said.

Dan Dillard, CEO of the Burn Prevention Network, believes the sunscreen might not have fully absorbed into Sigworth's skin and the droplets from the aerosol spray might have still been in the air.

"As he approached the flame, the charcoal simply caught the vapor trail and it follows the vapor trail to where the bulk of the substance is, which is on his body," said Dillard.

"I think if people were told this is flammable for two minutes on your skin, people wouldn't use it," Sigworth said.

He doesn't plan to sue, but it sharing his story and photos with others to make sure no one else ends up in the hospital after applying sunscreen.

"It was so scary," he said, "and I just wouldn't want to see it happen to anybody else."

Student, 12, suspended after 'kill list' found

See it on TV? Check here. SOUTHOLD (WABC) -- A good will gesture led a Long Island student to discover he and several classmates are on a kill list. The list contained more than just names.

"It literally said at the top in big letters, 'kill list.' So it's scary," Noah Ludlow, 12, said.

Pace thought he was being nice when he invited a new classmate, who doesn't speak the best English, to sit at lunch with Noah and his friends. But then Noah saw what the student had written in his notebook.

"I look over and there's a bunch of names and one of them is my first name and I say, 'Is that me?' He goes yeah and he had illustration for each one how he was gonna kill each one," Pace said.

He says he saw 20 names in all. He told a teacher at Southold Junior Senior High School. Administrators say they quickly notified police, who removed the 12-year-old for an interview and a medical examination. Even though he's been suspended from school, investigators declined to file criminal charges.

"Usually it turns criminal when it is a direct threat from one person to another person and at this point I don't think our investigation has leaned towards any direct threats being made," police said.

In fact, school administrators say they're convinced the student who wrote the list didn't actually understand what it meant when he drew it up. Still, Superintendent David Gamberg says they haven't taken it lightly, suspending the student who may not be allowed back.

"We take all of these matters - anything that approaches anything like this is taken seriously and should be taken seriously," Gamberg said.

But not seriously enough for Noah's mom, who has chosen to home school her son until she knows for sure his classmate isn't coming back.

"The child has instilled fear in students in the place they're supposed to feel safe," she said.

Will Smith slaps reporter after he tries to kiss the actor

Will Smith got upset after an overly-friendly welcome from a Ukrainian reporter at the Moscow premiere of "Men in Black 3" on Friday.

In the press line, Smith greeted the man, who proceeded to give the actor kisses on both cheeks and apparently got too close to a mouth kiss, which caught the actor off-guard. Smith pushed the man back, saying "What the hell is your problem, buddy?" before slapping him with the back of his hand.

Smith, who was still on Russia's Life News' camera, said the reporter tried to kiss him on the mouth and quipped, "This joker. He's lucky I ain't sucker punched him."

Smith has not commented about the incident. After the incident, the 43-year-old actor continued to walk down the red carpet and talk to other reporters and sign autographs for fans, a source told OnTheRedCarpet.com.

A source told TMZ that the reporter's mouth brushed up against Smith's mouth.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the reporter in question may have been Vitalii Sediuk, who is known for his pranks and was responsible for giving Madonna hydrangeas at the Venice Film Festival last September, which the singer said she "loathed." In response to the incident, Sediuk said he forgave her rudeness.

Will Smith is set to reprise his role as Agent J in "Men In Black 3," which hits theaters stateside on May 25. He also has several movies in production and more than three dozen in development, including sequels to "Independence Day," "Hancock," "I, Robot" and "Bad Boys," and a prequel to his 2007 film, "I Am Legend."

Child in critical condition after being hit by pole

Eyewitness NewsLODI (WABC) -- A young boy in New Jersey is in critical condition after he was struck by a large metal pole on Thursday.

Police say two brothers, reported to be ages 6 and 11, were playing in a backyard on Walnut Place in Lodi when the rusty pole collapsed and fell on top of them.

One of the boys, believed to be the 6-year-old, was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center suffering from traumatic arrest, in which a severe chest injury causes the heart to stop beating.

EMTs reportedly spend a long time working on the boy, and his condition remains unclear.

The other boy suffered an injured leg.

According to neighbors, the kids were playing on a clothesline. They apparently threw a scooter over the line and were hanging on it when the pole holding the clothesline snapped and fell on the boy.

Teenager dies after falling into East River

EAST HARLEM (WABC) -- A 15-year old boy has died after falling into the East River Saturday night.

He was one of two teens who were walking along the water at East 105th Street and the FDR Drive in East Harlem.

They were apparently walking on a railing, when the boy fell into the water.

The NYPD and FDNY responded to the scene.

Authorities say the teen was under water for at least 20 minutes before he was pulled out.

Rescue crews worked to try to save him, after bringing him up from the water.

"We arrived in three and a half minutes," said FDNY Battalion Chief John Donnelly. "We had a diver in the water in ten minutes."

Despite their frantic efforts, the boy was pronounced dead a short time later at Metropolitan Hospital.

"I've never seen anything like that," said a witness, Carmen Vazquez. "And seeing a limp body like that, so young..it's hard."

Mistrial unlikely after Espada juror refuses to deliberate

NEW YORK (WABC) -- There are new developments Thursday in the highly-publicized embezzlement trial of former New York State Senator Pedro Espada, Jr.

The judge met with the jury Thursday morning after one juror refused to deliberate.

The jury did resume deliberations despite the setback. The judge reminded all 12 jurors of their oath and obligations.

The judge did not single out any particular juror, but told them they were required to keep an open mind as they decided Espada's fate.

The former lawmaker spoke out, blasting the governor for blocking funds to his Soundview health clinic. It is the same clinic that he is accused of embezzling money from.

"No one should be backdoored or threatened away from a position that they know in their mind and heart to be right," he said.

At this point, it does not appear that the judge will declare a mistrial.
