Welcome to the WABC's "The Mirror Ball: Dancing with the Stars" blog. This blog is written by Jennifer Matarese, a loyal viewer of "Dancing with the Stars" and a WABC employee. This season we'll watch the stars struggle to become pro dancers and compete for the mirror ball trophy! I look forward to hearing all of your opinions on who you think should win! 09/24/2012 Bar is Set High on 'Dancing With the Stars: All Stars'

Are you ready for this?!  Was your mind blown by the star power?  It’s finally here, season 15, better known as “Dancing With the Stars: All Stars”!

Dwts1
Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke Charvet looked great!  I LOVED Brooke’s beautiful dress!

Dwts2
The stars paraded on out!  The band was playing their song.  It was really great to see some of the couples back together and some of the new pairings as well.  One thing is for sure, if we thought the dancing was fantastic last season, it is going to be amazing this season with all of the champions and near-champions in the ballroom.

Dwts3
Up first with the Cha Cha was Joey Fatone and Kym Johnson!  The NSYNC crooner and runner up is looking forward to beating Season 4 champ Apolo Ohno, so we’ll see if he can do it.  So the smoke was smoking up the stage and he started off with a huge jump right over Kym!  He had a lot of flair and they had a ton of pizzazz!  What a way to start off the All-Star season!  I really think they looked sharp and had a lot of fun with the dance, that’s exactly what you want to see!  Hopefully the judges liked it too.  Len explained that the judging is changing, they are now judging with half points too!  Len said that he loved watching him dance and had a high performance level and said to check out his footwork but thought it was great.  Bruno said he always brings it on and that was the way to do it.  He reminded him to straighten the back of his knee though.  Carrie Ann said that he’s one of her favorite showmen, but Tom didn’t let her finish her comment!  So who knows if she had something negative to add.

Their Scores: Carrie Ann – 6.5, Len – 7, and Bruno – 7, for a total of 20.5 out of 30.  Carrie Ann added that she had more to say to explain her score but didn’t get the chance.

05/22/2012 'Dancing With the Stars' Champions Awarded Mirror Ball Trophy!

The “Dancing With the Stars” finale started off with all of the pros and the Dance Troupe performing a dance number to get the audience and pumped up for the final performances.  The stars from this season then joined their pro partners in the dance.  The remaining three couples took center stage and got ready to perform just one more time for additional judges’ scores.

Donald peta
Len and the judges chose Donald Driver’s Freestyle dance to see again.  Cowboy Troy was back to perform as well.  It was great the second time around too!

05/21/2012 Amazing Freestyle Performances on 'Dancing With the Stars'

In the final night of performances, each of the three remaining couples, Donald & Peta, William & Cheryl, and Katherine & Mark, had to compete in two dances. All three couples had to perform a dance chosen by the judges that they have previously performed, but incorporated new music and new choreography.  Then, each couple performed the unpredictable and highly anticipated no rules Freestyle dance to music they chose themselves.

Dancing with the stars 2011

Bruno helped William & Cheryl perfect their Cha Cha.  This was a hit the first time around so I expected nothing but the best this time too.  His hip action is second to none!  The audience was screaming the whole time and you could tell Cheryl and William were both having a great time out there on the dance floor.  They did a great job and it was a great start to the show.  Len said it was as good as he’s ever seen in 14 seasons.  Bruno said it was an intoxicating Cuban cocktail!  He added that his hip action left him green with envy.  Carrie Ann said that the magic is still there and is joined with sophistication and added that William has grown miles since the season began.

Their Scores: Carrie Ann – 10, Len – 10, and Bruno -10, for a total of30 out of 30!  A perfect score!

05/20/2012 Last opportunity to impress the judges!

After 10 weeks of dancing, Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd, Katherine Jenkins & Mark Ballas and William Levy & Cheryl Burke have made it to the finals. However, only one couple can be crowned the winner. The finalists will have their last opportunity to impress the judges on Monday, when each of the couples will compete in two dances.

All three couples will have the chance to show their improvement over the course of the season by performing a dance chosen by the judges that they have previously performed.  This time, they will be able to incorporate new music and new choreography. Each couple will also perform the unpredictable freestyle to music they have chosen themselves.

Tuesday’s two-hour season finale opens with a stunning opening number with the entire cast and the Troupe. All  of this season’s eliminated couples will return to the ballroom to perform some of the most memorable routines. There may also be a few surprises!  Gladys Knight, will accompany a dance performance, and Kelly Clarkson will also sing a medley of her “Dark Side” and “Stronger,” and will be accompanied by Kym Johnson, Tony Dovolani, Anna Trebunskaya, Tristan MacManus and the Troupe.

As the last part of the competition on Tuesday, the three finalists will perform a new routine in the “24 Hour Challenge” – in which they will have had 24 hours to pair their dance style of choice to music given to them after Monday night’s show. This routine will be scored out of 30 and will round out the judges’ scores across both nights. Who will be the one to take home the Mirror Ball Trophy?

05/15/2012 Stunning Upset on 'Dancing With the Stars' Semifinals Results Show!

Four fantastic couples were whittled down to three on “Dancing With the Stars”.  The results show kicked off with the judges picking William and Cheryl’s Samba to see again.  They know how to choose a crowd pleaser!  William was back out there shaking it again.

Dwts logo

Then, they replayed Katherine’s part of the dance that caused an injury to her lower back apparently.  She said that something twinged in her back and the next thing she knew she fell down.  Fortunately, she will be able to continue on in the competition if America chose to keep her around…and they did!  They are in the finals!  Katherine was overjoyed and she and Mark carried her around on the stage.  Tom Bergeron said, “I’m no doctor but her back looks better now!”

05/14/2012 The Final Four Compete in the Semifinals on 'Dancing With the Stars'!

It’s time for the final four in the semifinals tonight!  The final three will get to dance their Freestyle dance next week so the stakes are high as everyone loves to show off with that very popular segment.  I have to say that the final for left are really the creme of the crop this year.  They are all fantastic dancers and it seems that it will be tough work for the judges tonight.  There was an incident with Katherine Jenkins, but we’ll get to that later.

William cheryl first dance
Tonight, the semifinals kicked off with William and Cheryl and their Tango.  I love their intensity it’s always top notch.  The camera really did a great job of following their intricate footwork tonight.  He really took control of the dance and led Cheryl across the dance floor and the crowd responded!  It was a fantastic job overall, but I wonder if he seemed just a tad stiff during the dance.  Len said that overall it was terrific, and said that he would have liked a slightly tighter hold though and he seemed a little flat footed at times.  Bruno said he was full of animal magnetism and that he was like the dictator of the Tango!  Carrie Ann said that his lines and angles were gorgeous, and then she picked on his shimmies and one over-rotation on the drop.  I’m sure no one in the audience or at home for that matter really picked up on those subtleties.

Their Scores: Carrie Ann – 9, Len – 9, and Bruno – 10, for a total of 28 out of 30.  That’s a great way to start the night!

05/13/2012 Which three couples will land in the finals?

After last week’s nerve-racking double elimination, the four remaining couples will face off in the semifinals. This week, the four couples will be performing one new Ballroom and one new Latin dance in order to determine which three couples will land in the finals.

On Tuesday’s results show, Carrie Underwood and Alanis  Morissette will hit the stage.

Carrie Underwood will be performing “Good Girl”, and will be accompanied by Tristan McManus, Sharna Burgess, Henry Byalikov and Emma Slater.  Alanis Morissette will be performing her new single “Guardian” and will be accompanied by Blake McGrath and Tyne Stecklein. Also on Tuesday, Julianne Hough and her co-star Diego Boneta will be performing from the upcoming release “Rock of Ages”, which is set to hit theaters on June 15th.

Tuesday also marks the last “Macy’s Stars of Dance” performance of the season.  Two yet-to-be-named Dancing with the Stars professionals will perform a Samba to “End of Time”. All season long, fans have voted on the performance song, style, costumes and pro dancers for the season’s Macy’s Design-a-Dance.

By Tuesday evening’s end, one couple will be eliminated, as determined by a combination of the judges’ scores and viewers’ votes on dances performed on Monday’s performance show. Who among the four couples will be the next to leave the ballroom?

Mirror Ball Blog: 'Dancing With the Stars: All Stars'

A double dance night ahead of a double elimination night on Tuesday featured the second perfect score of the season and some disappointing scores for others.   The couples danced either a fox trot or a Viennese waltz to open the show, then each celebrity had to perform as part of a trio for the second dance.

William Levy earned a perfect score in his first dance of the night with Cheryl Burke.  The couple finished with a 57, the highest of the night.

Williamlevy-cherylburke

The audience seemed to love Donald Driver and partner Peta Murgatroyd in their tango and in their second dance, a jive with Karina Smirnov.   The judges awarded them a 27 and a 28 respectively for a second place tie at 56.

Roshon Fegan was compared to a young Mickey Rooney in his opening fox trot with Chelsie Hightower.   They picked up a pair of 10s, but Len short-changed them for perfection with a 9.  They also finished with a 56.

Not far behind is Katherine Jenkins and USA TODAY blogger Mark Ballas.   Their opening dance scored only a 26, but they bounced back with a solid 29 in the threesomes, Katherine dancing a cha cha with Mark and Tristan MacManus.

Maria Menounos performed a romantic Viennese waltz with Derek Hough, and came off the dance floor with tears in her eyes.   They scored a 28, but then faltered in the threesomes with Henry Byalikov in a Bollywood-themed Samba.  Len said if he was scoring Bollywood, it would be a ten, but where was the Samba?   They ended up with a 53.

Melissa Gilbert finds herself at the bottom of the pile again, despite giving what the judges described as her best performances of the season so far.   She ended up with a 51.  The rehearsal video with Maksim Chmerkovskiy seemed very tense, at one point telling Melissa, "You are making me look like a terrorist!"  Yikes!

On Tuesday night, the two lowest scoring contestants will be eliminated, setting the stage for the semi-finals next week.

The final show airs on May 22nd.

Maksim Chmerkovskiy is leaving 'Dancing With The Stars' after 3 more seasons

Maksim Chmerkovskiy says he will leave ABC's "Dancing With The Stars" after three more seasons to pursue an acting career after competing on the series as a pro-dancer for more than six years.

The 32-year-old, who famously got into a heated argument with one of the show's judges in 2011, made the announcement on Thursday, September 20, saying on Twitter: "With nothing but love, gratitude and respect to all that played a part in that amazing aspect of my life."

UPDATE:: Chmerkovskiy is set to leave the show after three more seasons, his rep told OTRC.com. The next one, an "All-Stars" edition, premieres on Monday. He will compete with returning celebrity cast member and actress Kirstie Alley. ABC and BBC Worldwide Productions, which produce the series, declined to comment about Chmerkovskiy's future departure.

The dancer and choreographer, who was born in Ukraine when the territory was part of the Soviet Union, Tweeted a link to a New York Post interview that quotes him as saying he plans to leave "Dancing With The Stars" after his current contract expires at the end of 2013.

"What else do I have to do there after 15 seasons?" he told the newspaper, which dubbed him "Mad Max." "It makes total sense. The audience can't expect for me to want to stick around and the producers can't expect for me to want to stick around."

Chmerkovskiy told The New York Post that he secured a lead role in a major studio film, which beings production in January, and plans to concentrate on his acting career. He also says he may try to get his own reality show with his brother Val, who is also a "Dancing With The Stars" cast member.

In 2011, Chmerkovskiy starred in the Ukranian version of the reality show "The Bachelor" and currently hosts the game show "The Cube" in his native country. Chmerkovskiy made his U.S. acting debut on an episode of the comedy series "The Exes" in July.

Chmerkovskiy made his debut on "Dancing With The Stars in 2006 during season 2. During season 13 in October 2011, the pro-dancer made headlines after getting into a heated argument with Len Goodman, the most acerbic judge on the panel of three, who had criticized his routine with partner and soccer star Hope Solo. Backstage with co-host Brooke Charvet, Chmerkovskiy said: "With all due respect, this is my show. I help make it what it is."

He later told OTRC.com: "I've had it. I've had it a long time ago. I just kind of kept it cool but, look, she doesn't deserve it. That's all it is. Look, whatever helps the ratings. You're welcome show!"

In a 2012 memoir released in August, Solo accused Chmerkovskiy of being physically aggressive and verbally abusive towards her during their "Dancing With The Stars" rehearsals. She said he slapped her and then apologized and that producers offered her the chance to switch dance partners but that she ultimately declined, adding: "I didn't want to end Maks' career." Chmerkovskiy and reps for the series have not commented directly about her claims.

"I loved doing it," Chmerkovskiy said about his time of the show. "But to be honest with you, at 32, I am at what-about-me time. I am not thinking that with me leaving, the show will go off the air or anything. "Like my dad said, 'There are no irreplaceable people.' I wish them the next 50 years of success. But I have to do something else. I need to move on for me."

He is meanwhile continuing to rehearse for Monday's "Dancing With The Stars: All-Stars" premier with Alley, who Tweeted on Tuesday: "Our first dance is the Foxtrot..Gonna Trot that Fox all over that dance floor!!!!! Get On it!!!!"

Leading the charge among the breakout stars of the year was 31-year-old Ryan Gosling: leading man, musician, and major heartthrob. He looked buff in the buff in the comedy "Crazy Stupid Love," played a power-hungry press secretary in George Clooney's political thriller "Ides of March" and drove his Chevy to the levy in "Drive." Plus, he drives the ladies wild.

"Hot. Ryan Gosling is insanely hot!" said People Magazine's assistant managing editor Kate Coyne. "But he additionally has a red hot career."

Emma Stone emerged as a star in 2011 in "The Help," the film based on the sensational best-selling book that was the summer's sleeper hit. Stone, 23, starred as a white writer exposing the treatment of black maids in 1960's Mississippi.

"In 'The Help,' Emma Stone made the transition from that funny girl in the teen movies, like 'Easy A' and 'Superbad,' to a person you could actually take seriously in a real film," said Current TV host and writer Brett Erlich.

Emma Stone got some help in "The Help" from one of Hollywood's best kept secrets: Octavia Spencer, a breakout star at 41. Spencer's memorable performance as maid Minny Jackson is already generating awards show buzz.

"This was a huge year for Octavia Spencer, and really for the movie 'The Help,'" said Jen Garcia, People Magazine assistant editor."There is early Oscar talk for her, and I really think she has a chance to walk away with it."

Actress Melissa McCarthy was bold, brash and unabashed in this year's blockbuster comedy "Bridesmaids." The 41-year-old comedienne made a name for herself on the small screen this year as well, winning her first Emmy for outstanding lead actress on the sitcom "Mike and Molly."

"Triumphant!" said Coyne of the moment. "She literally was crowned the new queen of television. And finally, the nice girl finishes first."

"Here's the thing about Melissa McCarthy," said Peter Castro, deputy managing editor at People Magazine. "A lot of people compare her to Roseanne Barr. I think we should be comparing her to John Belushi. And I mean that in a good way. Because you know if you can belch, pass wind, have diarrhea in a sink, and be funny -- that's talent."

"Bridesmaids" was the brainchild of another breakout star -- 38-year-old Kristen Wiig -- who co-wrote the script about a sometimes rude and often crude, miserable maid of honor. Even before "Bridesmaids," Wiig was a standout on "Saturday Night Live," where for seven seasons she's poked fun at everyone from Nancy Pelosi to Kathie Lee Gifford. Next, she'll be getting in touch with her serious side, starring opposite Robert De Niro in a drama ironically called "The Comedian."

From the "It Girl" to "The New Girl." On the quirky Fox comedy, Zooey Deschanel plays a woman who moves in with a trio of single guys she found on Craigslist. It's a modern take on "Three's Company," turned on its head.

"'The New Girl' is one of the most popular shows of the new primetime season," said Erlich. "So Zooey went from being the object of affection for a lot of nerdy guys in movies, to being the object of a lot of nerdy guys on television."

"Revenge" might be a dish best served cold, but the star of this ABC drama is on this year's hot list. Emily VanCamp plays Emily Thorne, a vengeful vigilante out to seek retribution on the people who caused the destruction of her family and the death of her father. VanCamp, 25, previously starred on "Brothers and Sisters" and "Everwood."

"She popped up in this incredible show 'Revenge,' and it's been really a breakout hit of the year," said Garcia.

"American Idol" champ Scotty McCreery's debut album, "Clear As Day," has sold more than a half million copies and has been at the top of the Billboard Top Country Albums chart since its October release. In 2012, McCreery will head out on tour with Brad Paisley.

"You're going from reality TV star, and you have to cross that bridge to country music singer," McCreery told Robin Roberts earlier this year. "So I've gotta work hard and try to make that bridge and try to go across to being that country music singer and staying on the charts and staying around for awhile to make music."

"If you put Katy Perry and 'Lil Kim into a blender, Nicki Minaj would come out of it," said Castro.

And British pop star Adele is rolling in dough thanks to her Grammy-nominated hit "Rolling in the Deeo" off the quadruple-platinum selling album "21."

"I think her record is one of those rare, rare records that hipsters and grandmothers both like and probably for the same reason," said Larry Hackett, People Magazine's managing editor. "I think the songs are incredibly well crafted, her voice is incredibly pure, and every single song is great."

But that pure voice might have been pushed too far during a grueling world tour, forcing the 23-year-old singer to undergo surgery last month for a vocal hemorrhage.

"It was terrible luck, because she was white hot, and then she got these throat problems, and had to cancel shows, and just when she was gaining this momentum, you know, this thing happened. But she's so young. We are going to see so much more of her," said Castro.

It's a safe bet we'll be seeing much more of all these fresh faces and breakout stars in 2012.
