Welcome to the WABC's "The Mirror Ball: Dancing with the Stars" blog. This blog is written by Jennifer Matarese, a loyal viewer of "Dancing with the Stars" and a WABC employee. This season we'll watch the stars struggle to become pro dancers and compete for the mirror ball trophy! I look forward to hearing all of your opinions on who you think should win! 09/24/2012 Bar is Set High on 'Dancing With the Stars: All Stars'

Are you ready for this?!  Was your mind blown by the star power?  It’s finally here, season 15, better known as “Dancing With the Stars: All Stars”!

Dwts1
Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke Charvet looked great!  I LOVED Brooke’s beautiful dress!

Dwts2
The stars paraded on out!  The band was playing their song.  It was really great to see some of the couples back together and some of the new pairings as well.  One thing is for sure, if we thought the dancing was fantastic last season, it is going to be amazing this season with all of the champions and near-champions in the ballroom.

Dwts3
Up first with the Cha Cha was Joey Fatone and Kym Johnson!  The NSYNC crooner and runner up is looking forward to beating Season 4 champ Apolo Ohno, so we’ll see if he can do it.  So the smoke was smoking up the stage and he started off with a huge jump right over Kym!  He had a lot of flair and they had a ton of pizzazz!  What a way to start off the All-Star season!  I really think they looked sharp and had a lot of fun with the dance, that’s exactly what you want to see!  Hopefully the judges liked it too.  Len explained that the judging is changing, they are now judging with half points too!  Len said that he loved watching him dance and had a high performance level and said to check out his footwork but thought it was great.  Bruno said he always brings it on and that was the way to do it.  He reminded him to straighten the back of his knee though.  Carrie Ann said that he’s one of her favorite showmen, but Tom didn’t let her finish her comment!  So who knows if she had something negative to add.

Their Scores: Carrie Ann – 6.5, Len – 7, and Bruno – 7, for a total of 20.5 out of 30.  Carrie Ann added that she had more to say to explain her score but didn’t get the chance.

05/22/2012 'Dancing With the Stars' Champions Awarded Mirror Ball Trophy!

The “Dancing With the Stars” finale started off with all of the pros and the Dance Troupe performing a dance number to get the audience and pumped up for the final performances.  The stars from this season then joined their pro partners in the dance.  The remaining three couples took center stage and got ready to perform just one more time for additional judges’ scores.

Donald peta
Len and the judges chose Donald Driver’s Freestyle dance to see again.  Cowboy Troy was back to perform as well.  It was great the second time around too!

05/21/2012 Amazing Freestyle Performances on 'Dancing With the Stars'

In the final night of performances, each of the three remaining couples, Donald & Peta, William & Cheryl, and Katherine & Mark, had to compete in two dances. All three couples had to perform a dance chosen by the judges that they have previously performed, but incorporated new music and new choreography.  Then, each couple performed the unpredictable and highly anticipated no rules Freestyle dance to music they chose themselves.

Dancing with the stars 2011

Bruno helped William & Cheryl perfect their Cha Cha.  This was a hit the first time around so I expected nothing but the best this time too.  His hip action is second to none!  The audience was screaming the whole time and you could tell Cheryl and William were both having a great time out there on the dance floor.  They did a great job and it was a great start to the show.  Len said it was as good as he’s ever seen in 14 seasons.  Bruno said it was an intoxicating Cuban cocktail!  He added that his hip action left him green with envy.  Carrie Ann said that the magic is still there and is joined with sophistication and added that William has grown miles since the season began.

Their Scores: Carrie Ann – 10, Len – 10, and Bruno -10, for a total of30 out of 30!  A perfect score!

Three final couples prepare for Dancing with the Stars finale

Posted by WABC on May 21, 2012 in DWTS Season 14 | Permalink | Comments (0)

05/20/2012 Last opportunity to impress the judges!

After 10 weeks of dancing, Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd, Katherine Jenkins & Mark Ballas and William Levy & Cheryl Burke have made it to the finals. However, only one couple can be crowned the winner. The finalists will have their last opportunity to impress the judges on Monday, when each of the couples will compete in two dances.

All three couples will have the chance to show their improvement over the course of the season by performing a dance chosen by the judges that they have previously performed.  This time, they will be able to incorporate new music and new choreography. Each couple will also perform the unpredictable freestyle to music they have chosen themselves.

Tuesday’s two-hour season finale opens with a stunning opening number with the entire cast and the Troupe. All  of this season’s eliminated couples will return to the ballroom to perform some of the most memorable routines. There may also be a few surprises!  Gladys Knight, will accompany a dance performance, and Kelly Clarkson will also sing a medley of her “Dark Side” and “Stronger,” and will be accompanied by Kym Johnson, Tony Dovolani, Anna Trebunskaya, Tristan MacManus and the Troupe.

As the last part of the competition on Tuesday, the three finalists will perform a new routine in the “24 Hour Challenge” – in which they will have had 24 hours to pair their dance style of choice to music given to them after Monday night’s show. This routine will be scored out of 30 and will round out the judges’ scores across both nights. Who will be the one to take home the Mirror Ball Trophy?

05/15/2012 Stunning Upset on 'Dancing With the Stars' Semifinals Results Show!

Four fantastic couples were whittled down to three on “Dancing With the Stars”.  The results show kicked off with the judges picking William and Cheryl’s Samba to see again.  They know how to choose a crowd pleaser!  William was back out there shaking it again.

Dwts logo

Then, they replayed Katherine’s part of the dance that caused an injury to her lower back apparently.  She said that something twinged in her back and the next thing she knew she fell down.  Fortunately, she will be able to continue on in the competition if America chose to keep her around…and they did!  They are in the finals!  Katherine was overjoyed and she and Mark carried her around on the stage.  Tom Bergeron said, “I’m no doctor but her back looks better now!”

05/14/2012 The Final Four Compete in the Semifinals on 'Dancing With the Stars'!

It’s time for the final four in the semifinals tonight!  The final three will get to dance their Freestyle dance next week so the stakes are high as everyone loves to show off with that very popular segment.  I have to say that the final for left are really the creme of the crop this year.  They are all fantastic dancers and it seems that it will be tough work for the judges tonight.  There was an incident with Katherine Jenkins, but we’ll get to that later.

William cheryl first dance
Tonight, the semifinals kicked off with William and Cheryl and their Tango.  I love their intensity it’s always top notch.  The camera really did a great job of following their intricate footwork tonight.  He really took control of the dance and led Cheryl across the dance floor and the crowd responded!  It was a fantastic job overall, but I wonder if he seemed just a tad stiff during the dance.  Len said that overall it was terrific, and said that he would have liked a slightly tighter hold though and he seemed a little flat footed at times.  Bruno said he was full of animal magnetism and that he was like the dictator of the Tango!  Carrie Ann said that his lines and angles were gorgeous, and then she picked on his shimmies and one over-rotation on the drop.  I’m sure no one in the audience or at home for that matter really picked up on those subtleties.

Their Scores: Carrie Ann – 9, Len – 9, and Bruno – 10, for a total of 28 out of 30.  That’s a great way to start the night!

05/13/2012 Which three couples will land in the finals?

After last week’s nerve-racking double elimination, the four remaining couples will face off in the semifinals. This week, the four couples will be performing one new Ballroom and one new Latin dance in order to determine which three couples will land in the finals.

On Tuesday’s results show, Carrie Underwood and Alanis  Morissette will hit the stage.

Carrie Underwood will be performing “Good Girl”, and will be accompanied by Tristan McManus, Sharna Burgess, Henry Byalikov and Emma Slater.  Alanis Morissette will be performing her new single “Guardian” and will be accompanied by Blake McGrath and Tyne Stecklein. Also on Tuesday, Julianne Hough and her co-star Diego Boneta will be performing from the upcoming release “Rock of Ages”, which is set to hit theaters on June 15th.

Tuesday also marks the last “Macy’s Stars of Dance” performance of the season.  Two yet-to-be-named Dancing with the Stars professionals will perform a Samba to “End of Time”. All season long, fans have voted on the performance song, style, costumes and pro dancers for the season’s Macy’s Design-a-Dance.

By Tuesday evening’s end, one couple will be eliminated, as determined by a combination of the judges’ scores and viewers’ votes on dances performed on Monday’s performance show. Who among the four couples will be the next to leave the ballroom?

Mirror Ball Blog: 'Dancing With the Stars: All Stars'

A double dance night ahead of a double elimination night on Tuesday featured the second perfect score of the season and some disappointing scores for others.   The couples danced either a fox trot or a Viennese waltz to open the show, then each celebrity had to perform as part of a trio for the second dance.

William Levy earned a perfect score in his first dance of the night with Cheryl Burke.  The couple finished with a 57, the highest of the night.

Williamlevy-cherylburke

The audience seemed to love Donald Driver and partner Peta Murgatroyd in their tango and in their second dance, a jive with Karina Smirnov.   The judges awarded them a 27 and a 28 respectively for a second place tie at 56.

Roshon Fegan was compared to a young Mickey Rooney in his opening fox trot with Chelsie Hightower.   They picked up a pair of 10s, but Len short-changed them for perfection with a 9.  They also finished with a 56.

Not far behind is Katherine Jenkins and USA TODAY blogger Mark Ballas.   Their opening dance scored only a 26, but they bounced back with a solid 29 in the threesomes, Katherine dancing a cha cha with Mark and Tristan MacManus.

Maria Menounos performed a romantic Viennese waltz with Derek Hough, and came off the dance floor with tears in her eyes.   They scored a 28, but then faltered in the threesomes with Henry Byalikov in a Bollywood-themed Samba.  Len said if he was scoring Bollywood, it would be a ten, but where was the Samba?   They ended up with a 53.

Melissa Gilbert finds herself at the bottom of the pile again, despite giving what the judges described as her best performances of the season so far.   She ended up with a 51.  The rehearsal video with Maksim Chmerkovskiy seemed very tense, at one point telling Melissa, "You are making me look like a terrorist!"  Yikes!

On Tuesday night, the two lowest scoring contestants will be eliminated, setting the stage for the semi-finals next week.

The final show airs on May 22nd.

04/30/2012 Classical Night Brings the First Perfect Score of the Season!

It’s Classical Night on “Dancing With the Stars” and this is the very week last year where we were first introduced to Katherine Jenkins.  Now, instead of just being a guest performer, she’s a contestant.

Dancing with the stars 2011
The show opened with a stunning performance by a world class violinist Joshua Bell.  It was just amazing, and the Dance Troupe did an amazing job dancing to it.  This genre of music is a lot harder to dance to because there’s no distinctive beat; you just have to go by the count in the music.

Up first with a Rumba, is Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas dancing to Cannon in D.  This is going to be interesting, it’s a sensuous dance that you normally wouldn’t think of doing to classical music.  Right off the bat, I think they took a little too long to get into the dance by Mark making a huge production of him taking off his shirt.  Len probably won’t like that.  However, it was really full of grace and beautiful lines from Katherine.  It was a slower Rumba, but it did have a lot of complicated holds, so we’ll see what the judges think about that.  The crowd sure loved it!  Len appreciated that they kept it elegant and he liked that Katherine stayed on time.  He did mention him taking his top off!  I knew it!  Bruno said that she was the embodiment of the power of beauty.  Bruno said that he would have liked to see the dance a little raunchier, but technically thought it was superb.  Carrie Ann said that she is unmatched in the competition.

Their Scores: Carrie Ann – 9, Len – 9, and Bruno – 9, for a total of 27 out of 30.

Meet Katherine Jenkins

She was a virtual unknown when the season began, but thanks to Dancing With The Stars, Katherine Jenkins is slowly becoming a household name.   Each week, millions are rooting for the Welsh opera singer.  Eyewitness News Reporter Kemberly Richardson had a chance to talk to the woman who some are calling her America's new sweetheart.

Dancers square off on 'Classical Night'

Monday's "Dancing with the Stars," themed Classical Night, opens with a stunning live performance from classical music superstar Joshua Bell, who will be performing "Vivaldi's Summer," accompanied by the Troupe.

Other special musical artists joining the evening are soprano prodigy Jackie Evancho and world renowned Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo, who will grace the stage, accompanying dance performances throughout the evening.

Evancho will be performing "Dark Waltz" during a pro dance performance with Tristan MacManus and Karina Smirnoff. The seven remaining couples will compete to famous pieces of classical music and return to the ballroom floor later in the night for their always entertaining Team Dances.

Team Paso's Melissa and Maks, William and Cheryl and Donald and Peta battle Team Tango's Katherine and Mark, Maria and Derek, Roshon and Chelsie and Jaleel and Kym during Monday night’s show.

Earlier this season, he charmed audiences as we watched him Samba and Foxtrot, but on Tuesday night, Gavin DeGraw returns to the ballroom as a special musical guest. He will be performing his new hit single "Sweeter," accompanied by Karina Smirnoff and Louis Van Amstel.

And the final Dance Duel will be held this week, with the bottom two couples performing the Rumba, to the same song at the same time as the judges decide who will be the next eliminated couple.

Tuesday night not only brings back DeGraw and eliminates one more couple, it also brings us "Dancing with the Stars: Ballroom Battle." This competition features six pro dancers who paired together and held auditions for amateur couples throughout America. One couple was selected to represent each pro-dancer team in a head-to-head Ballroom Battle. On Tuesday, the three winning couples with their coaches – Cheryl Burke, Tony Dovolani and Louis Van Amstel – will compete in a live finale on stage. Each couple will perform a no-holds-barred Jive and the judges will name the Ballroom Battle champions.

Also, during Tuesday night’s show, there will be an "AT&T's Spotlight" performance by Richard "Steelo" Vazquez, who will perform with the Groovaloos for a very exciting and uplifting performance. "Steelo" was one of the top B-boy dancers working in music, film and television and a member of the popular dance group The Groovaloos. Sadly, in 2011 he suffered a brain aneurysm which resulted in him losing his ability to speak and walk. He spent six months in the hospital and now goes to physical rehabilitation five days a week, seven hours a day. On Tuesday, Steelo will reunite with the Groovaloos for the first time since his aneurysm.

Although he isn't back to full strength, this performance will be a testament to the perseverance he, his family and friends have shown despite all odds being against them.

By Tuesday evening’s end, one couple will be eliminated, as determined by a combination of the judges’ scores and viewers’ votes on dances performed on Monday’s performance show. Who among the seven couples will be the next to leave the ballroom?

04/24/2012 It Comes Down to Youth vs. Experience in Motown Week's 'Dance Duel'

The dance troupe kicked things off with a dance medley to some Motown hits.  I really liked how they used the whole ballroom and showed off Louis Van Amstel’s awesome choreography.

Dwts1

Dwts2
William & Cheryl, Maria & Derek, Jaleel & Kym, and Melissa & Maks were all up first to find out if they were safe or in jeopardy.  The first couple safe was Jaleel & Kym!  Yay!  I really like them.  The first couple in jeopardy was Maria & Derek, I am shocked!  William & Cheryl found out they were safe and Melissa & Maks also found out they were in jeopardy.  We’ll find out later if either of the couples in jeopardy are actually in the bottom two and if they will have to face off in the dance duel.

04/23/2012 Motown Dance Marathon Shakes Things Up on 'Dancing With the Stars'

The show started right off the bat this week with a performance by legend Smokey Robinson.  The Troupe members did a great job dancing to “Tracks of My Tears” and then out of nowhere, Martha Reeves started singing “Dancing in the Street”.  If that wasn’t enough, “The Temptations” come out with “Get Ready” and then the party was really started!  It’s Motown Week on “Dancing With the Stars”!

Motown1

Weirdshot
Something weird happened during the intro and they didn’t show Donald and Peta.  Instead they showed a trumpet player.  Where’s Donald?  After watching it back, they were there, and it looks like it was a camera mistake.  They were standing there in the lineup at the end of the stair walk downs so I guess it was just a mistake.  It is after all live TV!  Jaleel and Kym look like a prince and princess I must say!  Then they revealed the band and they will be accompanying the Motown legends all night long.

On this week's "Dancing with the Stars", it's Motown Week!  It's going to be full of legends like Smokey Robinson, The Temptations and Martha Reeves.  The legends will actually kick off the show tonight, performing an unforgettable live Motown medley accompanied by the Dance Troupe.  For the first time ever, each artist will perform with the talented "DWTS" band and musical director Harold Wheeler before each of the remaining eight couples begin their competitive dance.

04/17/2012 First Ever Dance Duel Elimination on 'Dancing With the Stars'

This elimination was the first time that the bottom two would go head to head in a Cha Cha dance duel where the judges would decide who to save.

Mariandderek
Carrieannkissed
The judges decided that they would like to see Maria and Derek’s sexy Salsa dance again.  Maria didn’t seem as into it this time as she did last night when they were getting judged on it, she was like, more relaxed or something.  So Derek took off his shirt again, but this time instead of kissing Maria, he ran over to Carrie Ann, the band stopped and he laid a big one on her (pretty sure it was just her cheek).  Then as they walked away, I’m pretty sure she had a little wardrobe malfunction and she had to put her chest back in her top.

04/16/2012 Latin Night Heats Up 'Dancing With the Stars'

Wow, really?! It’s already the half way point of the competition!  It’s Latin Night and all things are hot and spicy including the band!  They had a great opening number along with Carlos Santana.

Santana

Then it was time to greet the stars.  Was William Levy there?  That is what I was waiting to see.  And what do you know…there he was!  Hooray, he strutted down the stairs, shirt half open.  Do you know who also looked really good tonight, Melissa Gilbert!  Her hair looked great!

Preview of Latin Night on 'Dancing With the Stars'

It's going to get hot, hot, hot out on the dance floor tonight on "Dancing With the Stars"!  That's because it's Latin Night!

Dancingwiththestarsnew

The remaining nine couples will dance either the Salsa, Argentine Tango, or the Samba!  Sounds muy caliente!

UPDATE: The contestant I was most excited to see dance tonight, might be out for the night!  William Levy injured his ankle during rehearsals.  He's getting an MRI to find out how bad he is hurt, let's hope he can still dance!

Also, Global Music Icon Carlos Santana is expected to perform this week!  It's going to be a great show that you won't want to miss.  The fun begins at 8 p.m. tonight on ABC!

04/10/2012 Shocking Bottom Two on 'Dancing With the Stars' Elimination Show

“KISS” kicked off the show with another rockin’ performance of “Lick it Up”.

Kissperformance
The pros Mark Ballas, Chelsie Hightower, Henry Byalikov and Oksana Dmytrenko did a high energy ballroom dance and it was a great way to start the show and get the crowd pumped!

Gavinmaks
