Arrest made in disappearance of teen

A man has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of Northern California teenager Sierra LaMar, who vanished more than two months ago.

Antolin Garcia-Torres was arrested Monday and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of murder and kidnapping, according to the sheriff's department.

Garcia-Torres, 21, was responsible for the disappearance of the 15-year-old girl, say police, who declined to offer any additional details on the arrest, according to The Associated Press. More information will be provided at a news conference later this morning, according to police.

Garcia-Torres is from Morgan Hill -- the same area where Sierra lived with her family and where the teen disappeared – and is the owner of the red Volkswagen Jetta that is believed to be connected to the girl's disappearance, KGO reported.

Garcia-Torres was arrested around 6 p.m. at the Safeway store where he works, KGO reported.

"It was about 5:30, I was at work and we just saw a bunch of cops and guns drawn and I couldn't see anyone if they took him away. I just saw the cops, it was just cops and cop cars, it was all really fast," Bobby Fox, a witness at Safeway, told KGO.

The California cheerleader was last seen March 16 as she left to catch the school bus. The girl's parents contacted authorities later that day after receiving an email from her high school informing them the teen did not show up for class.

Days later, Sierra's cellphone and her Juicy brand bag containing a pair of folded jeans and a T-shirt were recovered on the side of the road in the opposite direction of her bus stop. Investigators searched her phone and computer, but did not find clues to her disappearance.

Divers began searching reservoirs near her home last month, but have yet to come up with a trace of the teen. Earlier this month the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department impounded the red Volkswagen Jetta believed to be connected to Sierra's disappearance.

Authorities found the mid-'90s, four-door red sedan with a black hood after releasing pictures of a similar vehicle Monday, according to Santa Clara County Sheriff's Sgt. Jose Cardoza. But investigators did not disclose specifics of how they identified the car and its connection to the case.

The vehicle came to the attention of authorities after it was captured on multiple surveillance videos in the area of the missing girl's Morgan Hill home and the area where authorities recovered the teen's belongings.

Last week's episode of the TV program "America's Most Wanted" featured Sierra's case, and investigators have since been sorting through a series of tips and possible leads.

"He was arrested today because this is how we thought that the arrest should be done and public safety is our number one concern," Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith said Monday. "We don't want anyone else hurt. We don't want any more little girls taken."

Arrest made in 1998 Bronx murder case

See it on TV? Check here. NEW YORK (WABC) -- In February 1998, police found a woman unconscious at 2314 Valentine Avenue. The Medical Examiner's office later deemed her death a homicide due to strangulation.

It was also determined that the victim was sexually assaulted.

Until April 1998, the victim remained unidentified. However, through dental records, she was able to be identified as 14-year-old Marleny Cruz.

Until September 2011, the case remained unresolved. Detective Malcolm Reiman of the Bronx Homicide Task force requested a DNA profile of the evidence that was recovered from the victim. Later in December, it was discovered that the DNA profile matched 40-year-old James Martin, who was incarcerated in the Somerset Correctional Facility in Pennsylvania for the 2005 homicide of his common law wife. He had also served time as a teenager for murdering his friend to steal his Air Jordan sneakers.

On Wednesday, the suspect was extradited to New York and charged.

Marleny Cruz was a runaway who had been through several foster homes. Her body was unclaimed for months, and another family actually had a wake for her before learning she was not their daughter.

Marleny Cruz had been living in foster homes since her mother died. Police say she ran away multiple times, and did drugs and worked as a prostitute before being killed. After her death, the NYPD started a special program to find young teenage prostitutes and get them off the streets.

Arrest made in Beats by Dr. Dre headphones theft

Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- The popular Beats by Dr. Dre headphones continue to attract more thieves, this time on Long Island.

Three men punched and robbed a 16-year-old in South Floral Park Wednesday.

Meanwhile, police in the Bronx made an arrest related to the $300 to $500 high-priced headphones.

Police say officers recognized 22-year-old Francisco Delacruz from this video.

Delacruz allegedly slashed the victim with a broken bottle while trying to steal his headphones.

The headphones have been a growing target among thieves since they hit store shelves around Christmas. There have been 172 complaints of stolen Dr. Dre Beats headphones from January 1, 2012 through May 6, 2012, compared to last year when there were only 25 complaints during the same time frame. Upper Manhattan and northern Brooklyn have reportedly seen the largest spike in robberies.

Anyone with information in regards to these incidents is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).

Strauss-Kahn free from house arrest; charges stand

AP  By JENNIFER PELTZ and TOM HAYSNEW YORK -- Smiling faintly as he walked out of court, former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was released from house arrest Friday after prosecutors acknowledged serious questions about the credibility of the hotel maid who accused him of sexual assault.

The charges against him stand - for now, at least. But weeks after saying it had a strong case that was only getting stronger, the district attorney's office was on the defensive. So was the housekeeper's lawyer, who continued to insist that Strauss-Kahn had violently abused the woman.

An attorney for Strauss-Kahn, meanwhile, called the turn of events "a great relief." The case underscores "how easy it is for people to be charged with serious crimes and for there to be a rush to judgment," William W. Taylor said.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, had been confined for weeks to a luxury New York City townhouse on $6 million cash bail and bond after his arrest on attempted rape charges that forced his resignation as head of the International Monetary Fund and appeared to destroy any hope he had of running for president of France next year.

But then, on Friday, defense lawyers went into court to ask that his bail conditions be eased, with prosecutors' assent.

"The strength of the case has been affected by the substantial credibility issues regarding" the accuser, Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon told the judge, who then canceled Strauss-Kahn's bail and most of the other restrictions.

According to prosecutors, the woman admitted she lied to a grand jury about what she did immediately after the alleged attack. She actually went on cleaning rooms instead of reporting the episode right away, prosecutors told the defense in a letter.

She also told prosecutors a tearful, vivid but untrue story of having been gang-raped in her native Guinea, later admitting it was among various false accounts of oppression that she had been told to memorize to enhance her 2004 application for political asylum, prosecutors said. She claimed someone else's child as her own dependent and lied about her income on tax forms and was untruthful about "a variety of additional topics," including her personal life, they said, without elaborating.

Days after Strauss-Kahn's arrest, the woman was recorded talking about the case and mentioning Strauss-Kahn's wealth in a phone call to a man incarcerated on a drug charge, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss matters not made public in court.

The woman also raised questions by saying she knew little about tens of thousands of dollars others have deposited in bank accounts in her name, the official said. Authorities suspect the money might be drug-related, the official said.

District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. portrayed the turnabout as a case of prosecutors doing the right thing.

"Our commitment to the truth and the facts will govern how we proceed" in the Strauss-Kahn case, he told reporters.

Neither he nor Strauss-Kahn's lawyers took questions.

Authorities have not said specifically what they now think of the truthfulness of the woman's allegations against Strauss-Kahn.

Investigators found traces of his semen on her uniform, and that is powerful evidence there was a sexual encounter of some kind, though the defense has said anything that happened was not forced.

Still, the apparent lies about her background and her behavior could seriously damage her credibility as a witness if the case goes to trial.

Edward A. McDonald, a defense lawyer and former federal prosecutor and assistant district attorney in New York City, said dropping the case could be next. Prosecutors are "sending a real clear sign that they've gotten to the point where they think there is little hope of rescuing the case," he said.

Another hearing is set for July 18. Strauss-Kahn did not get his passport back and will not yet be allowed to leave the country, but he will be free to travel within the U.S., his lawyers said.

Strauss-Kahn himself remained mum Friday, but he strode confidently up the granite steps to the courthouse with his wife, French journalist Anne Sinclair, at his side, after they arrived in a Lexus SUV. After the short hearing, he slowly walked out the building with his arm on her shoulder, smiling at the crowd outside.

Moments later, the accuser's attorney, Kenneth Thompson, fired back.

"It is clear that this woman made some mistakes, but that doesn't mean she's not a rape victim," the lawyer said.

The 32-year-old hotel maid accused Strauss-Kahn of chasing her through his luxury suite in May, trying to pull down her pantyhose and forcing her to perform oral sex. Thompson said Strauss-Kahn bruised the woman's genitals, tore a ligament in her shoulder and ripped her stockings.

"From day one, she has described a violent sexual assault that Dominique Strauss-Kahn committed against her," Thompson said.

"She has described that sexual assault many times, to prosecutors and to me, and she has never once changed a single thing about that encounter."

He accused the district attorney of shying away from the high-profile case and blasted as lies reports that the woman was involved with a drug dealer.

Strauss-Kahn was held without bail for nearly a week after his May arrest. His lawyers ultimately persuaded a judge to release him by agreeing to an ankle monitor, surveillance cameras and armed guards. The security measures were estimated to cost him as much as $200,000 a month, on top of the $50,000-a-month rent on the townhouse in the city's TriBeCa section.

Prosecutors at the time wanted him kept him in jail, arguing that because of the seriousness of the charges, he might flee the country. In releasing Strauss-Kahn on Friday, State Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus said: "In light of recent developments, the risk that you would not be here appears to have receded quite a bit."

If the case collapses, it could once again shake up the race for the French presidency. Before the scandal, Strauss-Kahn, a prominent Socialist, had been seen as a leading potential challenger to conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy. French politician Michele Sabban said the Socialists should suspend the presidential primary calendar because of the new developments.

The new doubts about Strauss-Kahn's accuser could also feed suspicions in France that he was the victim of a politically motivated setup.

Indeed, Maxime Laumailler, an economics student from Rennes, France, who was standing outside the New York courthouse, called the case "a plot" against Strauss-Kahn.

"We are so surprised that the Americans are pre-judging him like this," said Laumailler's girlfriend, Charlotte LeBihan.

After Friday's hearing, Strauss-Kahn returned to the brick townhouse. A deliveryman arrived a few hours later with an arrangement of red, white and blue balloons, along with one shaped like the Statue of Liberty.

The card read, "Enjoy your freedom on Independence Day," said deliveryman Sean Hershkowitz. He said he didn't know who sent the greeting.

Friday evening he went to Scalinatella's, an Italian restaurant, for dinner on the Upper East Side with his wife and returned around 10:15 p.m.

Lindsay Lohan begins reduced jail sentence - under house arrest

Lindsay Lohan turned herself in early on Thursday, May 26, to begin a jail sentence for violating her probation and due to overcrowding, had her sentence reduced from 120 to 35 days, which she will serve under house arrest.

The 24-year-old actress surrendered to authorities at a Los Angeles jail around 5 a.m. local time and was soon sent back to her home in Venice, California, OnTheRedCarpet.com has learned. Her release date is set for June 29. No booking photo was taken.

"Ms. Lohan has chosen to serve her time in home detention with an electronic monitoring program offered through the Department's Community Based Alternatives to Custody program," Steve Whitmore, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Spokesperson, said in a statement to OnTheRedCarpet.co,.

Lohan's sentence was handed down weeks ago after a judge ruled that she had violated her probation stemming from a 2007 drunk driving and cocaine possession case by being charged with theft. It was speculated that she would be allowed to serve her time at home. The actress was ordered to report to a Los Angeles jail by June 17.

Lohan had pleaded no contest to misdemeanor theft in a missing $2,500 necklace case. She was given three more years of probation for the case with no additional jail time. The actress, who has served time behind bars before, has said she supports the judge's decision.

Lohan was also ordered to complete 480 community service hours at a women's shelter and in a morgue, undergo psychological counseling, attend a Shoplifters Alternative class and pay several fines.

She has already begun her community service duties but cannot continue her work or her classes while under house arrest. The actress was ordered to resume her duties after she is released.

Lohan had been pre-approved for house arrest after her theft charge was reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor. She is set to return to court for a progress report on July 21.

Lohan has been to jail several times for stints that have lasted between 84 minutes and 14 days, a sentence reduced from 90 days mostly due to overcrowding. Last month, after her sentencing for her probation violation, Lohan spent several hours inside a Los Angeles jail before she was bailed out.
