RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (WABC) -- Communities are cleaning up and restoring power after heavy rain and strong winds moved across the area overnight Wednesday.
About 10,000 customers on Long Island alone were without power at the peak of the outages.
In Queens, Con Ed workers were out after wind gusts yanked down power lines in Flushing. And in Hackensack, New Jersey, the rain nearly washed out some streets.
The bulk of the damage was on Long Island, where the roof of a helicopter hangar at MacArthur Airport partially collapsed from the high winds.The incident happened just before 10 p.m. at the airport in Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County.
The hangar belonged to Eastern Helicopter. A portion of the steel building's roof came down. Thankfully, no one was injured or trapped.
Gusts of nearly 60 miles per hour also peeled back the roof of a building housing Heritage Flight Academy airplanes. Five airplanes and a boat were in the building, but no damage was reported to them.
