Suspect critically injured in shootout with police

  Adam Stephan, Eyewitness NewsNEWARK (WABC) -- A suspect was injured during a police involved shooting in Newark.

It happened Monday just before 10 p.m. near the intersection of 18th Avenue and Livingston Street.

NJ State Police troopers and Newark Police officers were both pursuing the suspect apparently, according to police scanners, for his involvement in a carjacking.

The chase ended in a crash and shots were exchanged between the cops and the suspect.

The suspect was shot multiple times and is being transported to University Hospital in critical condition.

Multiple crime scenes have been established in the area as a result of the pursuit.

No police officers were shot.
