Kathie Lee Gifford asks Martin Short how his late wife is doing

During the "Today" show on Wednesday, Kathie Lee Gifford asked Martin Short how his wife was doing, not realizing she passed nearly two years ago of natural causes.

During the live NBC morning show, Gifford asked the actor what the secret was to his great marriage with Nancy Dolman, noting that the two "are still madly in love" and "make each other laugh."

When Gifford asked the comedic actor "how many years are you in love with her now?" Short quietly answered, "Thirty-six."

Short, who was promoting the new animated movie, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," did not correct Gifford during the show, but told her afterward. Gifford said that the actor told her, "you said I had one of the greatest marriages and I still do."

"I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family," Gifford Tweeted after the show. "He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I'm so grateful."

Short's wife died on August 24, 2010 at age 58 of natural causes, after battling ovarian cancer. The couple met in 1972, during a Toronto production of "Godspell."

Dolman and Short, who were married 30 years, had three children - Katherine, 28, Oliver, 26, and Henry, 23, who just graduated from Notre Dame.

Dolman was a comedic actress and a native of Canada, like Short. She had a recurring role in 1981 on the television series "Soap" but retired from acting to raise the couple's children.

Short has starred in "The Three Amigos," "Clifford" and the "Father of the Bride" films. He has also appeared on series like "How I Met Your Mother," "Weeds" and received an Emmy nomination for his role on "Damages."
