Two dead in Brooklyn apartment fire

Eyewitness NewsBROOKLYN (WABC) -- Two people have died in a four-alarm fire in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn.

The fire, which began after 9:00 p.m., burned through 16 Covert Street and spread to other houses on either side of it.

A fire official described it as a "very active, fast moving fire."

During the course of the fire, a man fell from the third story window of 16 Covert Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the fire was out, another man was found on the top floor on the same building. He was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Names of the victims have not been released.

Two other people were treated for injuries.

Eyewitness News has learned that the Buildings Department had received complaints the building was illegally subdivided, but it's not known if that played any role in the fire or how fast it spread.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
