100,000 gallons of oil fuel huge Australia fire

MELBOURNE (WABC) -- A spectacular fire erupted in a factory in Melbourne, Australia, Thursday, sending huge flames and thick smoke into the night sky.

Fire crews were confronted by a huge wall of flames as about 100,000 gallsons of motor oil burned.

Authorities say 130 firefighters were working to contain the blaze, which they believe started in an office and spread to an attached factory where all the oil is stored.

"Once it got into the factory, mineral oils exploded. We've seen huge fire balls come up as a result of the fire that erupted into the sky," Victoria State Metropolitan Fire Brigade's Trevor Owen said on Australian television.

The fire was contained by early Friday, but officials say it may take several days to get the flames out.

Local residents in the vicinity of the fire were warned to stay indoors, according to local media. (Copyright ©2011 WABC-TV/DT. All Rights Reserved.) Get more U.S. & World News »
