Web produced by Bill King, Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- Fleet Week took a tragic turn early Thursday, as a Marine was struck by a car and killed while trying to cross a street on the West Side.
The 22-year-old Marine had just come into town on one of the boats arriving for the festivities Wednesday.
He was crossing 12th Avenue at 49th Street around 1 a.m. when he was hit. He was one of several people who had just gotten out of a cab and were attempting to cross the Westside Highway from the center median. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are looking into whether the driver of the silver Acura that hit him fled the scene or was just turning around to come back, because the driver did return shortly after the incident. It is believed that driver is the one who called 911.The driver is in custody, but at this point does not face any charges.
