Flu shot may prevent premature births

Maura Sweeney, Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- A new study shows getting a flu shot while pregnant can offer more protection to expectant moms than previously thought.

Pregnant women can suffer severe complications from the flu.

Their babies can be born prematurely or with low birth weight.

The research shows infants born to vaccinated moms were 40% less likely to be premature and 69% less likely to be of low birth weight.

The study was conducted by researcher Saad B. Omer, of the Emory University Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta.
