What to Consider When Choosing a New York Moving Company

Are you planning on moving this year? Each year, a large number of individuals and families make the decision to relocate. If you are planning on becoming one of those individuals, there are a number of important factors that you should first consider. One of those things involves the hiring of a moving company.

If you are moving to New York or moving from New York, you may want to consider hiring the services of a New York moving company. Most individuals and families make the decision to hire a moving company because it is easier on them. A moving company allows most relocating individuals and families to continue about their daily activities, without having to worry about how their belongings will get from one place to another. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, you are advised to, at least, consider using a New York moving company.

To hire a New York moving company, you will first have to familiarize yourself with all of your available options. You can do so by examining your local phone book, especially if you already reside in the New York area, or you can also use the internet. Whichever search method you choose, it is likely that you will find a large number of results. These results are likely to include a number of different New York moving companies. Before deciding on one particular New York moving company, it is important that you examine a number of factors. These factors should include the cost of services, the type of services offered, and the area that each moving company focuses on.

Most New York moving companies will cover a wide portion of New York State. In fact, you should also be able to find at least one New York moving company that will help you move to or from another state. The distance that a New York moving company covers is important when choosing a company to do business with. This is because you will not want to spend your time researching a New York moving company that is unable to offer you assistance.

It is also important to examine the cost of services. You will find, in most cases, that each New York moving company sets their own fees. These fees may be large, small, or average, when compared to traditional moving costs. Perhaps, the fees that you will be charged should be one of the first things that you should examine. This will allow you to find another New York moving company if you are unable to afford the services of your first choice.

While the overall cost of using a New York moving company is important, it is also important to examine what is included in those fees. The more services that are included, the higher the fees will be, on most occasions. Of course, a New York moving company will transport your belongings from one location to the next; however, they may also perform additional duties. Those duties may include packaging up your belongings or even storing them at an offsite location. If additional services are included in the cost and you do not need to use those services, you are advised against paying for them.

By keeping the above mentioned points in mind, you should be able to find an affordable New York moving company to do business with. The research and careful examination, mentioned above, is important because you will be giving your treasured belongings to people that you do not know.

NEA Gives New York Schools a Failing Grade

Though public schools across the nation are improving their environments for students, the New York schools are falling behind, according to the National Education Association (NEA). In a recently posted web page, the NEA cited many failings of New York. Here are some of the challenges that the NY schools continue to face during the 2006-2007 year.

Average Sizes for Classes and Campuses

The elementary and secondary schools in New York continue to be among the largest schools in the nation. The average size of an elementary school within the New York schools system is 27 percent higher than the national average. With an average of 558 students per elementary school, the schools in New York rank fifth to have the largest elementary populations on average in the United States. Their high schools are even larger, averaging 1004 students per campus. That is 33 percent higher than the national average, making the school system in New York the eighth largest in average size.

The class sizes in the New York schools also are among the largest with an average of 22 students per class. The NEA ranked the New York schools as the tenth largest in average elementary class size nationally.

Poor Infrastructure

In addition to the overcrowding in the New York schools, their crumbling and aging infrastructure is in desperate disrepair with a third of the facilities in need of extensive repair or replacement. The costs to complete construction and repair needs on school buildings and facilities are estimated to be as high as $15 billion. During the 2006-2007 school year, the New York schools will have literally tens of thousands of students attending class in mobile trailers, storage areas, and converted bathrooms -- not the most conducive environment for learning.

The NY schools rank among the bottom ten states in the percentage of schools with at least one unsatisfactory environment condition. Seventy-six percent of the New York schools fall into this category. There are 36 percent with poor ventilation that is bad for children with respiratory ailments, such as asthma, and contributes to higher illness rates of children and staff from passing viruses back and forth through the stagnant air. Additionally, 28 percent of all New York schools have bad plumbing and 31 percent of the schools have roofs that are crumbling.

As important as computers have become to educational opportunities in the United States, more than a third of the NY schools lack adequate outlets and the necessary wiring for computer use in the classroom.

Teacher Salaries

Teacher salaries in the schools system in New York continue to decline. While other public school systems across the nation have increased salaries over the past ten years, teacher salaries in the New York system have decreased in constant dollars by eight percent. This means that many of the quality teachers are either moving out-of-state to teach or moving into new career fields that pay better. The NEA has designated the school system in New York as one of the four worse states for allowing real teacher salaries to decline.

As the NEA points out, the New York schools have many challenges yet to face in order to provide a quality education to the youth within the state of New York.

Brooklyn boy mauled to death by family dog

Web produced by Dan Hosea, Eyewitness NewsBROOKLYN (WABC) -- A tragedy in Brooklyn: a little boy is mauled to death by the family dog in a gruesome and bloody scene.

Investigators still don't know what caused the dog to attack.

But now the Administration for Children's Services has removed the victim's siblings from the home.

The vicious attack happened Friday night in the family's apartment on Pacific Street in the Ocean Hill section of Brooklyn.

Many people who live in the neighborhood say they were always concerned about the dog involved in the attack.

Some are even saying it was a ticking time bomb that was just waiting to explode.

Four-year-old Jayelin Graham's lifeless body was rushed to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was bitten on the head, neck and torso by the Cane Corso mastiff in his mother's apartment.

The little boy's aunt, Calandra Jubeark said, "Within a split second it happened."

That quick her nephew Jayelin was viciously attacked and mauled to death.

The boy's mother telling her sister, "She said, 'The dog wouldn't let go.' It's painful," Jubeark said.

The gruesome aftermath of the attack was evident in the bloodstained hallway where tensions ran high after the mother came out screaming for help.

Several residents helped to subdue the dog which was in the apartment with other children.

Police tranquilized the dog after the attack.

The mother was emotionally distraught over the horrible death of her four-year-old child.

Her grandfather led her back into the apartment where the attack occurred.

"What a horrible way to die. I've got a lot of frustrations, a lot of emotions, a lot of anger." the grandfather said.

Residents and Jayelin's paternal aunt, D'Neisha Graham, say the boy was living in filthy conditions with dog feces and urine in the apartment.

"If you walk in there it is disgusting. It was very nasty. Nobody, anybody, let alone a child, could stay in that house," Graham said.

Finale of 'Oprah Winfrey' to air after 25-year run

See it on TV? Check here.AP  Entertainment NewsCHICAGO -- Oprah Winfrey walked on stage for her talk show finale Wednesday to a standing ovation from her studio audience before thanking her viewers for watching for a quarter of a century.

Watch Oprah's last show at 4 p.m. on WABC-TV Channel 7!

****SPOILER ALERT**** "Twenty-five years and I'm still saying 'Thank you America,"' Winfrey said. "Thank you so much. There are no words to match this moment."

Winfrey told them that sometimes she was a teacher, but more often her viewers taught her. She called the episode her "last class."

The show's first moment was a clip of Winfrey's first show. She taped the last episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on Tuesday in Chicago.

Winfrey was the only person on stage with little background music and very short flashback clips.

"When she came out, her appearance, the way she stepped on stage and the message she brought about finding yourself, your purpose," said audience member Wanda Nash, 47, of Chicago, an executive assistant and foster parent. "It was all about Oprah."

Winfrey kissed and hugged her longtime partner, Stedman Graham, and made her way through the halls of Harpo Studios, saying goodbye to her staff, audience members said.

Winfrey announced in November 2009 that she would end her popular talk show after 25 years.

Tuesday's taping came a week after Hollywood's A-list and 13,000 fans bid Winfrey farewell during a double-episode extravaganza at Chicago's United Center. The shows that aired Monday and Tuesday included Aretha Franklin, Tom Cruise, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jordan and Madonna, among other stars of television, music and movies.

They were just a few of the approximately 30,000 guests on the show over 25 years.

The bare-bones final taping had its share of celebrities in the audience including Tyler Perry, Maria Shriver, Suze Orman and Cicely Tyson, but none of them joined Winfrey on stage.

There were 404 audience members, according to Harpo Productions.

The show received 1.4 million ticket requests throughout its final season, the company said.
