Blood test determines if you had a heart attack

Bill Ritter, Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- A new blood test could help determine whether someone is really having a heart attack.

The test measures levels of troponin.

It's a protein released into the blood when the heart muscle is damaged, such as during a heart attack.

The higher the level, the more damage there is to the heart.

By using the test, doctors could know within three hours whether a patient who's come to the hospital with chest pains has definitely had a heart attack.
