AP  By MICHAEL LIEDTKE APSAN FRANCISCO -- Apple Inc. has unveiled the iPhone 5, and says it's thinner and lighter than the previous model, even though it has a bigger screen.

As expected, the screen is taller than on the iPhone 4S, making room for another row of icons.

It will also come with the capability to connect to the fastest new wireless data networks, both in the U.S. and overseas. That's another feature that was widely expected. Some competing phones in the U.S. have had this ability for a year and an half.

Thanks to new technology that eliminates a separate touch-sensing layer in the screen, the phone is 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter, said Apple marketing head Phil Schiller.

Disney announces new nutritional ad standards

AP  Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK -- Disney says its programming will no longer be sponsored by junk food.

The Walt Disney Co. said Tuesday that it will become the first major media company to ban such ads for its TV channels, radio stations and websites intended for children. That means kids watching Saturday morning kids' shows on the company's ABC network will no longer see ads for fast foods and sugary cereals that don't meet Disney's nutrition standards.

The guidelines won't go into effect until 2015 because of existing advertising agreements.

First Lady Michelle Obama called the announcement a "game changer" in a statement.

"With this new initiative, Disney is doing what no major media company has ever done before in the U.S. - and what I hope every company will do going forward," Obama said.

Disney sais its guidelines are aligned with federal standards to promote the consumption of fruits and vegetables and reduce the intake of sodium, sugar and saturated fat.

The company also introduced its "Mickey Check" seal of approval for nutritious foods sold in stores, online and at its parks and resorts.

"The emotional connection kids have to our characters and stories gives us a unique opportunity to continue to inspire and encourage them to lead healthier lives," Disney CEO Robert Iger said in a statement.

Public health and childhood obesity experts cautioned that the effectiveness of any ban will be in how junk food is defined by the company. Previous attempts by the food industry to regulate marketing to children have been criticized as being too generous in which products were allowed.

But Aviva Must, chairwoman of the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine at Tufts School of Medicine, said Disney could succeed where government thus far has made little progress.

"There seems to be limited taste for government regulation," said Must, who has studied childhood obesity for decades. "So I think a large company like Disney taking a stand and putting in a policy with teeth is a good step."

Studies have long established a direct link between junk-food advertisements on television and childhood obesity, and a legitimate ban could have far-reaching public health effects, said Dr. David Ludwig, director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children's Hospital.

"Elimination of junk-food advertisements will not make television viewing a physically healthy activity," he said. "But elimination of advertisements will substantially reduce the harm of television viewing in childhood."

Disney Magic of Healthy Living partners with parents and inspires kids and families to lead healthier lifestyles. This initiative includes engaging content, useful tools, as well as nutrition guidelines that pair the fun of Disney's stories and characters with a well-balanced portfolio of foods and healthier lifestyle choices. Disney's nutrition guidelines, which were first introduced in 2006, were developed with the help of experts and align to federal standards. NYPD announces stop-and-frisk training changes

See it on TV? Check here.AP  Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK -- The New York City police department is making changes to officer training and supervision amid an outcry over its stop, question and frisk tactics.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly sent a letter to city council speaker Christine Quinn detailing the changes. Quinn has been a vocal critic of the policy. Last year, more than 600,000 people were stopped, mostly black and Hispanic men.

Kelly says the department has reiterated its policy that prohibits racial profiling. A new course details how to conduct a lawful stop. More than 1,500 officers are receiving the training, and more will follow.

The news Thursday comes a day after a federal judge gave class-action status to a lawsuit by people who had been stopped. The judge said the department's attitude was "deeply troubling."

Giuliana Rancic announces she will undergo a double mastectomy - Video

Giuliana Rancic returned to "The Today Show" on Monday, December 5, to update viewers on health and announced that she will undergo a double mastectomy as part of her treatment for breast cancer.

The E! News host, who announced that she had early stages of breast cancer on October 5, appeared on the morning talk show with her husband when she said she decided to undergo the procedure after the lumpectomies she previously had did not effectively eliminate the cancer.

Her husband Bill Rancic, explained that the couple was going to a follow up appointment with her doctor when they learned the news.

"The next day we were going into the doctor hoping for some good news and unfortunately the one breast they weren't able to clear the margins and get all the cancer out," he said. "So we were then faced with a decision to make. Do you go back and do another lumpectomy and try to clean it out or do you go for another more radical procedure."

Giuliana Rancic also said that her desire to have child played "a big part" of her decision to get the double mastectomy but "not all of it."

"If I had chosen to just do another lumpectomy and then do radiation and then do anti-estrogen therapy, which means two to five years of medication, that basically puts me into early menopause," Giuliana Rancic said. "Then I would have to put off having a baby for several years. So that was something we took into account."

Giuliana married Bill Rancic, the winner of the first season of "The Apprentice," in 2007. The couple launched their own reality show, "Giuliana & Bill" in 2009.

She added, "To be honest, at the end all it came down to was just choosing to live and not looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life."

Bill Rancic said the two spoke with several experts and specialists before making the decision. "If she would have gone with the lumpectomy and radiation, then you have to go in every six months for the rest of your life getting mammograms," he said.

"Knowing Giuliana, she's going to be worrying three weeks before the mammogram, waiting for the results worrying and you're always looking over your shoulder," he added. "So I think in this particular case this was the best option for Giuliana."

"With the double mastectomy I have less than a 1 percent chance of getting it back," Giuliana Rancic said. "With another lumpectomy, radiation and medication, I could have seen 20 to 30 to 40 percent chance in my lifetime and for me it just wasn't worth it."

"I couldn't be more at peace with the decision. But it's hard, and I still break down some nights," Giuliana Rancic added. But I'm okay."
