Construction forces Brooklyn Bridge closures

Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- All Manhattan-bound lanes on the Brooklyn Bridge will be closed for the next two weekends.

The closures are part of the New York City Department of Transportation's project to rehabilitate the bridge ramps and approaches.

Full closure of the Manhattan-bound lanes will take place between 11:59 p.m. Friday, October 5 and 6 a.m. Monday, October 8, and between 11:59 p.m. Friday, October 12 and 6 a.m. Monday, October 15.

During these two 54-hour closures, all Manhattan-bound traffic will be redirected to alternate crossings, including the Manhattan Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge and the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel,

Brooklyn-bound access to the bridge will be maintained via ramps from Pearl Street & Center Street onto the contra-flow lanes.

There will be additional Brooklyn-bound access to the bridge via the Park Row ramp from Frankfort Street on both weekends.

To accommodate detoured traffic, additional lanes will be available for Manhattan-bound motorists on the Manhattan Bridge.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Traffic is especially heavy on the Manhattan Bridge heading into Manhattan, so motorists are advised to consider using the other East River crossings like the Williamsburg Bridge, the Ed Koch Bridge (59th Street Bridge), and the Battery Tunnel.

Five arrested by FBI in Ohio bridge bomb plot

AP  Eyewitness NewsCLEVELAND -- Federal authorities say five men have been arrested in an alleged plot to blow up a bridge near Cleveland.

The FBI said Tuesday there was no danger to the public because the explosive devices were inoperable and were controlled by an undercover FBI employee.

The men were arrested Monday on charges of conspiracy and trying to use explosive to damage property affecting interstate commerce. They range in age from 20 and 35. Authorities say at least three of the men are self-described anarchists and are not tied to international terrorism.

The FBI says the target of the plot was a bridge over the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in the Brecksville area, roughly 15 miles south of downtown Cleveland.

Masked man robs Old Bridge jewelry store

Andy Field, Eyewitness NewsOLD BRIDGE, N.J. (WABC) -- A geezer bandit caught on camera robbing a jewelry store may be much younger than he appears.

The suspect walked into a jewelry store along Route 9 in Old Bridge, New Jersey, wearing a rather distinctive disguise.

The robber knew what he wanted as security cameras recorded him rushing into the counter.

He drew a gun and ordering one clerk to the floor and then demanded another fill a bag as he meticulously selected various rings and bracelets.

"He came right in knew what he was doing, he walked in approached both employees, he had one employee get down, the second employee, he had him take him around, he pointed at the jewelry he wanted, they provided the jewelry," said Captain Robert Weiss, Jr., Old Bridge Township Police.

The Halloween masked man robbed Corbo Jewelers about 5 Tuesday afternoon at the Shoppes of Old Bridge along Highway 9.

The workers inside were terrified on what was a slow post Christmas sales day.

"The employees at the store were pretty shook up, but physically everyone was unharmed, he didn't hurt anybody, he pointed the weapon at them and left the store," Weiss said.

Old Bridge Township Police don't have much to go on but they're hoping someone recognizes something in the security tapes and helps find the thief.

"He's got a mask, he's got a hooded sweatshirt, he's a bit stocky, about 5'10", he's wearing an overcoat that makes him even look a bit larger," Weiss said.

NY-NJ bridge policeman earns $221,000

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Police at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have racked up $41.4 million in overtime this year, including a rank-and-file patrolman at the George Washington Bridge who has made $221,000.

Payroll figures released Friday by the Port Authority show 66 police officers have made more than $200,000 so far in 2011, thanks to overtime that in many cases has doubled their salaries.

The Port Authority Police Benevolent Association, the union that represents most of the police, says high overtime numbers are the agency's own fault. President Paul Nunziato said the union has been asking the Port Authority for years to hire more officers.

The agency operates New York City's airports, seaports, a train system, and several bridges and tunnels.

It says it reviews salaries, overtime costs and ways to reduce expenses on an ongoing basis.

Woman gives birth in Verrazano Bridge toll lane

Eyewitness NewsBROOKLYN (WABC) -- A Brooklyn woman has quite a story to tell her daughter when she grows up.

The woman gave birth to her in an EZ Pass lane at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge toll plaza.

The Staten Island Advance reports the woman was riding in a livery cab to the hospital, with her doctor right behind.

But when it became clear they wouldn't make it in time, they stopped at the well-lit toll plaza.

Bridge and Tunnel officers donated shoelaces and a pocketknife to cut the umbilical cord.

Third accident off Queensboro Bridge

See it on TV? Check here. Web produced by Dan Hosea, Eyewitness NewsQUEENS (WABC) -- Another car has flown off of a Queensboro Bridge off-ramp.

It was the third high-speed crash in six weeks.

And the only thing that surprised anybody was that this time no one was killed, the driver suffered minor injuries.

Matt Hyde has a dental office just across the street.

"I'm worried for anybody walking down the street," Hyde said.

It happened at about 5:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The driver lost control, flipped-over a parked livery car and landed on a cement barrier set-up to protect pedestrians after the last two crashes.

Last month, a passenger was killed.

Eight days before that, a pedestrian was killed; mowed down moments after stepping off the 7 train.

When the car slammed into a hair salon, the impact was captured on surveillance video.

All three crashes happened at the same time of day in exactly the same place.

The queens off-ramp from the lower roadway of the 59th Street Bridge where a construction project forces traffic to merge.

Police say all three drivers were on the outer lane where the speed limit is 30 miles per hour.

After the last crash, the off-ramp speed was reduced to 20 miles per hour and pavement strips were added to warn drivers.

But critics say it's not enough.

The Department of Transportation issued a statement that says in part:

"Today's incident remains under investigation by the NYPD, but preliminary reports suggest excessive speed appears to be the dominant factor, as it was in the previous crashes when the vehicles struck the guardrail prior to the turn and at least one arrest was made. Once the NYPD completes its investigation, DOT will conduct its own review to determine whether further changes at this location can improve safety. The geometry of the off-ramp to Queens Plaza South from the bridge's outer roadway, where these incidents occurred and which thousands of vehicles pass safely each day, has not changed since 2007, and this ramp was the same then as it is today. The changes made in 2007 did not significantly alter what was there previously. The construction project currently in progress is further east along Queens Plaza South and is not on the outer roadway off-ramp."
