World's tallest Ferris wheel coming to Staten Island

Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to unveil plans Thursday to build the world's tallest Ferris wheel on Staten Island, providing an iconic destination to the city's so-called "forgotten borough."

The project would also bring a retail and hotel complex to the Island's North Shore, and use the Staten Island Ferry to get shoppers there.

It is planned for 14 acres just north of the Richmond County Bank Ballpark, home to the minor-league Staten Island Yankees.

The New York Wheel would cost $230 million and carry 4.5 million riders a year.

At 625 feet, it would be the world's tallest observation wheel, exceeding the height of the Singapore Flyer. It would also be taller than the London Eye and a "High Roller" planned for the Las Vegas Strip.

The wheel would offer plush, enclosed passenger capsules to offer riders a world-class view of the Manhattan skyline.

Officials hope construction on the observation wheel would start in 2014 and be finished in 2015.

An adjacent outlet mall would be the administration's latest attempt to keep cost conscious shoppers from streaming out of the city.

And the city has long been searching for a destination for the two million-plus tourists who ride the Staten Island Ferry every year.

Officials anticipate both projects will pump nearly $500 million in private investment into the Staten Island waterfront.

Welcome to the WABC's "Coming Up Roses: The Bachelorette" blog. This blog is written by WABC employee Jennifer Matarese, a loyal viewer of "The Bachelor," "The Bachelorette," and "Bachelor Pad," who has been a fan since season 1. We'll watch your favorite "Bachelor" stars battle it out for $250,000! 09/25/2012 Sean Lowe is the New 'Bachelor'!!!

Wow!  Bombshell announcement!  Although it has been widely speculated, it is now official.  Sean Lowe is next season's "The Bachelor"!

Sean

Let's hope this hunky blond can find love.  Personally, I'm relieved it's not Ryan Lochte.  He's too much of a player.  Sean seems genuinely interested in finding Mrs. Right.  In case you don't know, Sean is 28 and is a businessman and entrepreneur from Dallas.

Here's the pool of the 25 women that Sean will get to meet and hopefully find his wife: from http://abc.go.com/shows/the-bachelor/photo-details/the-bachelorettes/1019280  There isn't a whole lot of information on them yet, but more is expected to follow.  At least we can get a good look at their faces.

So what do you think of Sean as the new "Bachelor"? Click comments below to share your thoughts! Season 17 of "The Bachelor" begins this coming January.

Hugs, Kisses & Roses,

Jennifer Matarese

09/12/2012 Full Transcript of Interview with 'Bachelor Pad' Winner Nick Peterson

Here is the full transcript of the interview with Nick Peterson, the big winner of "Bachelor Pad" 3!

Nick

Question:         So,Nick, what's the status of your relationship with Rachel now?  Did you guys end up talking things out andbecoming friends again or do you kind of have no intention to fix things?

Nick Peterson: No.  I – we haven't talked at all.  And would I like to?  Yes, absolutely.  But I figured I'd let it settle down a littlebit for a while because I know especially, you know, with the finale airinglast night that she's going to be bombarded with a lot of questions.

She's goingto stand up for herself, I'm sure, you know, and I would assume she's, youknow, not going to say some nice things about me.

So I'mgoing to let it settle down for a little while and then – and then hopefullymaybe we can patch things up.

09/11/2012 New Interview with 'Bachelor Pad' Winner Nick Peterson

Fresh off of his big "Bachelor Pad" win, Nick Peterson took some time to talk about his strategy, why he decided to keep the money for himself and what he plans to do with the $250k now that he has it.

Nick peterson
Nick said that he and Rachel have yet to talk aboutwhat happened the night of the finale and that he thinks he needs to “let itsettle down a bit” since the finale just aired. He said he knows that she is really angry with him, but that he wouldlike to patch things up with her in the future.

He said, “Was it tough sitting next to her crying, yes, but then after seeing what she said, I didn’t feel that bad.”  Nick is referring to two of the episodes thataired once they became partners.  He saidthat he saw that Rachel didn’t want to be his partner and several timesjeopardized their time there by saying she wanted to go home and secretlycalling Michael.

09/10/2012 Deceit Wins Over Loyalty on 'Bachelor Pad' Finale

This shocking, most disturbing “Bachelor Pad” finale ever, was that andeven more.  Let’s recap on how Rachelreally got the short end of the stick this season in basically every way.

It came down to Nick and Rachel and then Chris and Sarah in the finals.  They brought back all of the contestants torehash everything that happened on the show this season in a “tell all” kind offormat.

Michaelhotseat
Michael wasin the hot seat first and he said that what Erica said when he was eliminatedby her was uncalled for.  Erica says thatshe stands behind what she said.  Headded that he and Rachel had a great time but it just didn’t “you know”.  He said he thought things were amicable, andJaclyn said that she is still very hurt. He didn’t think there was enough there for a long termrelationship.  Michael said that Rachelwas falling in love with him and he just wasn’t with her.  The consensus among the other women in thehouse is that he pretty much led Rachel on. We’ll hear from Rachel on this topic later.

09/07/2012 Full Transcript of Interview with Chris Harrison

Here is the full transcript of the interview with Chris Harrison about "Bachelor Pad", the upcoming season of "The Bachelor", and even some details on how Emily and Jef from "The Bachelorette" are doing.

Chris harrison

Jennifer Matarese:       Soat the end of Monday's episode, you said that something in the finale was disturbing, and I was wondering if you could elaborate at all on that.

Chris Harrison:            Nottoo much without the kind of giving away what's the serving.  But yes, it's a little different.  And it's funny that I've heard several timesthat that is the worst.  It kind ofresonated with fans.  And the people onTwitter and everything, they're like, “Oh my gosh, he said dramatic before, buthe'd never said the word disturbing.”  Soit's funny how kind of something has caught everyone's attention.

But it is a– it's very different.  And we're tryingto think like, “OK, how do we say this is very different than just the gardenvariety drama that we bring, you know, every season and every week, year in andyear out?”  And it's a very differentevent that happens in particular that we've never seen before, so that was the– we had to bring something new to the game.

09/06/2012 Chris Harrison Dishes on the 'Bachelor Pad' Finale and the Upcoming 'Bachelor'

Chris Harrison, the Rosemaster himself, acknowledged that in the promo for this coming week’s “Bachelor Pad” finale, calling it “disturbing” really resonated with the fans.  He said that he couldn’t really elaboratemuch more on what he meant when he said that because it would give it away, butthat “it’s different than the garden variety drama” that the show is known foreach week and each year and it’s something we’ve never seen before.  Sounds juicy!

Chris harrison

Also, I know there has been A LOT ofspeculation as to who the next “Bachelor” is going to be and he said that thedecision has still not been made although the field has been narrowed downconsiderably.  Whenever he mentioned Roberto,he would always say “was” being considered and I asked him about that but heseemed to mean that he was being considered and not that it was pasttense.  I don’t know if I totally buythat.  I think we are looking at SeanLowe, Ryan Lochte (I hope not!) and possibly someone new!  Harrison said that they are always goingthrough the applications of guys wanting to be the next “Bachelor” and the possibilitythat it is someone we haven’t seen before does remain!  That would be exciting.

09/03/2012 The Final Four Couples Turn into the Final Four Contestants on 'Bachelor Pad'

We’re down to the final four and things are going to get wild andintense.  The housemates can nowpractically feel their wallets getting fatter with the $250k.  Nick and Rachel feel like they could be nexton the chopping block because they are not “romantic” partners and everyoneelse is.

Chris Harrison announces that the winner of the competition will have alot of power in their hands, but he doesn’t completely explain what thatmeans.  He does say that they all need topack and that one couple will be leaving once the competition is over.  The very astute Chris says that he thinks itmeans the winner will get to choose who goes home.  I’m guessing he’s right.

Bachelorpad2
The competition is called “Hanging by a Thread”.  One person has to sit up on a platform andhang on to a bar while the other team member answers “Bachelor” trivia.  Wrong answers means that the ropes holdingthe platform up start to disappear.  Thecouple who wins does select who will have to leave.

08/31/2012 Full Transcript of Interview with Kalon McMahon from 'Bachelor Pad'

Here is the full transcript of the interview with Kalon McMahon from "Bachelor Pad"!  If you didn't like him on "The Bachelorette" I think your opinion of him may change after the combination of watching "Bachelor Pad" and this interview!  He was very candid, open and honest.

Kalon

Question:            OK,so during your season of “The Bachlorette”, obviously a lot of people had astrong reaction to you and did like you very much, but you were extremelylikable on Bachelor Pad.  So I'mwondering if you wanted to change your strategy coming in or do you think Lindzibrought out the best in you?

Kalon McMahon:              Well,to be completely honest I don't know if it was necessarily either.  I can't say that I had a specific strategygoing to either show.  We filmed themvery, very close so I was still the same person.  It was just a very differentenvironment.  I was much morecomfortable, much happier, much more outgoing on The Bachelor Pad just becausesimply of the dynamics.

08/30/2012 Kalon Talks About Falling in Love on 'Bachelor Pad' with Lindzi

Kalon gave an interview to reporters today and he had the nicest things to say about his new lady Lindzi and his experience on "Bachelor Pad".

Kalon

Kalonsaid that he didn’t have a specific strategy for “Bachelor Pad” or for “TheBachelorette” but that the reason he seemed different is because he was in adifferent environment each time.  He saidthat he just naturally had a better connection with Lindzi than he did withEmily.

08/27/2012 Spelling Out Your Feelings on 'Bachelor Pad'

10 people now remain inside the “Bachelor Pad”.  Chris Harrison said that now people wouldhave to compete as couples and vote together as couples and get voted out ascouples.  That’s crazy!  I love how the game keeps changing.  Nick and Rachel now have to team up as acouple because Michael was eliminated last week.

Sarah and Chris decided to go and gloat about how they arestill in the house.  Ed, Blakeley andJaclyn all want Chris out of the house. He’s going to have to win this week’s challenge to stay in the game Ithink.

Bach1
The next day, the competitors all get on a yellow school busand drive to a performing arts center. Inside, they learn that they will be competing in a spelling bee!  This is going to be hilarious!  They have to spell the words by alternatingletters with their partners.  That’scrazy hard!  The top kid spellers inCalifornia were there to judge and the bell ringer kid was disgusted with howbad they all were, it was so funny! Believe it or not it was down to Chris and Sarah and Ed and  Jaclyn. The winners were Chris and Sarah! I have to admit, I’m really glad they won…I love to hate Chris!

Coming Up Roses: The Bachelorette Blog

Next Monday on the Bachelorette, the 19 remaining men get "tested" from the start about how they might fit into Emily's world as a dad, as well as working at a charity event that is near and dear to her heart.

The competition heats up when the bachelors learn that not all of them will get dates before the next rose ceremony, so the bachelors must take advantage of every opportunity to score points with Emily Maynard.

Ryan gets the first date of the season. After a quick visit with her girlfriends, Emily arrives at the mansion to take Ryan away for what he thinks will be a glamorous day of fun. But Emily has other plans, as she takes him to her home and instructs him in the everyday task of baking cookies for Ricki's soccer team. Will he pass the "test"? Later that night, Emily looks stunning as she scoops Ryan up in a sleek Aston Martin and brings him to a romantic dinner spot. After walking a red carpet lined with adoring fans, Emily and Ryan have a secluded fireside table where they discuss relationships and their potential future over dinner. Then things turn intimate even though the couple is the in middle of a crowd, as they are serenaded in a special concert by popular country band Gloriana, featuring their hit single "(Kissed You) Good Night." But is there enough romance for Ryan to get the rose?

The next day, 13 bachelors take to the stage and join Emily and the Muppets for a live performance benefitting The Ricky Hendrick Centers for Intensive Care at The Levine Children's Hospital. The men split up in groups to rehearse, but one man has a serious case of performance panic. He explains the problem to Emily and musters up enough courage to go on, but how will he feel when Miss Piggy targets him during the show?

The next day is a dream come true for Joe, as Emily meets him at a private jet and they're off to West Virginia to the exquisite Greenbriar resort, which holds many childhood memories for the Bachelorette, who spent time there with her family.

Meanwhile, back at the mansion, a poolside fight breaks out and two of the bachelors almost come to blows when Doug's fathering practices are questioned.

You can see the next Bachelorette on Monday night at 9:00 on ABC.  Emily only has 16 roses to give, so three of these fellas will be history after next week's show:

Aaron, 36, a biology teacher from Long Beach, CA

Alessandro, 30, a grain merchant from St. Paul, MN

Alejandro, 24, a mushroom farmer from San Francisco, CA

Arie, 30, a race car driver from Scottsdale, AZ

Charlie, 32, a recruiter from Nashville, TN

Chris, 25, a corporate sales director from Chicago, IL

Doug, 33, a charity director/realtor from Seattle, WA

Jef, 27, an entrepreneur from Salt Lake City, UT

Joe, 27, a field energy advisor from Los Angeles, CA

John "Wolf," 30, a data destruction specialist from St. Louis, MO

Kalon, 27, a luxury brand consultant from Houston, TX

Kyle, 29, a financial advisor from Long Beach, CA

Michael, 26, a rehab counselor from Austin, TX

Nate, 26, an accountant from Los Angeles, CA

Ryan, 31, a pro sports trainer from Augusta, GA

Coming Up Roses: The Bachelorette Blog

Bill King here, filling in for Jen Matarese while she's away on maternity leave. She'll still be handling a lot of the blog, but I'll pick up the slack when she needs me to. That being said, we're less than a week away from the premiere of Emily Maynard's quest for love on The Bachelorette. Host Chris Harrison was available for an interview Wednesday, and he gave up some of the goods on the upcoming season.

Chrisharrison

As usual, we'll post the full transcript of the interview tomorrow, but for now, here's the highlights.

The big theme of the conference call was that this season will be VERY DIFFERENT from seasons past, mainly because of the whole single mom thing that Emily has going on. Chris says that because of little Josephine Riddick "Ricki" Hendrick, a lot of changes were made and whole tone of the show will have a new vibe to it. With a lot of the filming taking place in her hometown of Charlotte, Emily was allowed to keep her daily life pretty similar to how it is normally, even driving her daughter to soccer practice.

One of the main reasons that the crop of guys seems soooo much better than previous shows is that potential contestants were aware that Emily was the Bachelorette before they signed up. So no shocking surprises for the guys when they get out of the limo.

Chris says there is no frat house humor as there is with younger contestants who aren't parents, and since all the guys knew they could be potential stepdads, there are more layers and more things going on.

I asked if the crop of guys was a reflection of Emily's high standards and the fact that, outside of the show, Brad may have been too much of an "average Joe" for her tastes. He countered that Brad is actually more successful that most guys on the show. That being said, he admitted the level of guys this season is through the roof, but that just goes to show the type of guys who wanted to sign up FOR Emily. "She's a catch," he said. "Just to look at her, you know."

I also asked about the importance of the guys having kids themselves in the selection process, and Chris said that to Emily, kids not a deal breaker or deal maker. She knows that a guy who came in as a single dad would know her a little better and "get" her a little more. But he says the good thing about her is that she's very young and wants more kids and to start and/or continue the family. She's just looking to find that special someone.

He says Emily was reluctant to jump into this as a single mom, but after trying it in the real world, she didn't have much luck there either. He said her biggest insecurity is that this will fail as well, and then what? She really wants to find someone, and is also looking for a guy to come in and help her take her hands off the wheel for a bit.

She has said she wants to more reserved that other Bachelorettes, without as much kissing and no hot tubs. But will there really be no hot tubs? "Hot tubs always mysteriously appear," Chris said.

Emily, however is not the crazy, bungee jumping party girl. Chris describers her as a southern gem, who like to wear high heels and dresses. He says that while the show caters to the Bachelor or Bachelorette, the producers still like to take him or her out of any comfort zone.

Chris says that while there will be, as always, drama and surprises along the way, what people will love is that Emily is holding that banner of being a single mom high. He says viewers will say, "Damn girl, well done," throughout the season. She handles her business, giving the men enough rope to hang themselves, and some of them do. If a guy is not dad material or husband material, she apparently has no problem clearing the deck.

He says he is rooting for her like crazy, and that viewers will be roped in by seeing a very vulnerable side to her. He says she has a very sincere perspective of what she wants in life, and that even he didn't know her as well as he thought he did before this.

A few people had the cajones to ask Chris about his divorce from his wife, even asking if he would ever consider being the Bachelor. He responded by saying that getting out of a 22-year relationship, with two kids, and starting a new life doesnt' make him the idea candidate right now or anytime soon. To his credit, he gave props to the media and understands that his position as a public figure makes the end of his marriage a news story. In the day and age of Facebook, Twitter and other social media, he is happy with how everyone handled themselves.

Chris says the show is still in production. Someone asked if we will see overnight dates with Emily as the Bachelorette? His response? "Who knows? What's a single mother to do?" Guess we'll have to watch to find out. Tune in Monday night for the premiere, and check back tomorrow for the full transcript of the interview!

Not sure if I have to sign this Hugs, Kisses & Roses, but that's all for today.

Bill

Coming Up Roses: The Bachelor Blog

Here is the full transcript of the interview with Amber T. as promised!

Ambert

Question:            So let’s start from the beginning.  Why did you want to be on the show?

Amber Tierney:                                Why did I want to be on the show?  Actually, I kind of did it on a whim.  I went with my friend, who’s this huge fan of the show, and she was going and she – we kind of talked and she was telling me, “You should go,” and I was like I kind of questioned it at first.  I didn’t know if I really wanted to, and she kind of talked me into it, and I was like, well, I really don’t have anything to lose.  So I decided to go, and then it was a good experience from there, so.

Question:            And did you – had you seen The Bachelorette with Ben?  Did you know who he was, and were you happy he was the Bachelor?

Amber Tierney:                                I actually did not.  I watched the first and the last episode of The Bachelorette, so I knew a little bit about him prior to going on, when I did find out he was the Bachelor.  I was happy to hear that he was, and I just learned more about him through ABC is where I found out more information about him.

Question:            So, based on your interviews (inaudible) a shoo-in to get a rose, and I was really surprised that you didn’t get one.  Were you surprised?

Amber Tierney:                                You know, I was a little surprised.  I was a little bit disappointed as well just because I did see that Jenna had got a rose, and it kind of made me question, I guess, Ben’s intentions at that point in time.  But then I realized that – I kind of reflected on it and realized that she was pretty fragile at that time and that he didn't really want to hurt her anymore, so.  I was a little surprised, though.

Question:            It’s always interesting to see what everyone does on the first night to get his attention.  Was there anyone in particular who really shocked you?

Amber Tierney:                                You know, I didn't see – I didn’t see a lot of what went on between Jenna and Monica.  I was – excuse me – I was pretty shocked with how upset that she did get, and she was just a little bit emotionally unstable.  But, then again, it's a really long night of shooting and everyone's tired, so emotions can definitely be a little bit more exaggerated in that situation.

Question:            So from the start, you know, obviously people have, you know, girls in their mind that they think will win.  Who – which, you know, are a couple of girls that you thought stood out and that Ben really liked from the get go?  Was it Courtney or was it maybe Kacie?

Amber Tierney:                                You know, I did see that he made a comment about Courtney being beautiful.  And so, you know, I could see possibly she's one of his favorites.  I'm wondering, once he gets to know her if – you know, her – she just seemed a little cold to me.  But one of my favorites was actually Nicki.  She's from – she’s from Texas, and I felt like they had a connection.  I also thought he kind of had a connection with Kacie.

Question:            Yes.  Very cute.  And also what was the girls’ take on Jenna, the blogger?  I mean, we couldn’t – you know, watching at home, we couldn’t tell if she maybe had a couple too many glasses of wine or if she was just a little, you know, just too emotional.  What was your take on her?

Amber Tierney:                                You know, I honestly did not see everything that happened in the – in the situation when I was there.  You know, personally, I kind of thought that she was a little bit of a hot mess, you know?    She got a little emotional.  But, like I said, it – everyone – you know, it was a long night and everyone's tired and, you know, emotions are high.  And, you know, drinking is involved.  So she could have had, you know, a couple, you know, too many drinks as well.

Question:            So we saw kind of a lot more gimmicks than normal.  I mean, the horse, the grandma, you know, poems, raps.  Do you feel like, A) you wish that – you know, you regret not having sort of more of a gimmick?  I mean, maybe a plate of beef nuts or, you know, bringing your grandma for him?

Amber Tierney:                                You know, I guess I probably could have brought some.  But, yes, you know, there was a lot of stuff going on and a lot of people were kind of trying to show their personalities and try to find a connection with him.

But, you know, I'm more – I’m just more lighthearted.  I liked to joke around, and so I thought kind of with talking and saying something that I thought might surprise him at the beginning would be more my personality.  Though I thought, you know, I was thinking probably the beef nuts probably would have – might have scared him away, but.

Question:            It might have.  It might have backfired anyway.

Amber Tierney:                                Yes.  Yes.

Question:            So, I just want to know, like, do you have any insight as to why you might have been eliminated?  Like did you think you were forming a connection with Ben or no?  And basically what reasoning do you think went into his decision to let you go so early on?

Amber Tierney:                                You know, I still really don't know.  I think that he has a little bit of time to talk – to try and get to know, or form some sort of connection with, 25 girls.  I didn't have any one-on-one time with him and, as you saw with the first episode, the one-on-one time that I did get, he was blindfolded.

So, you know, we didn't really get a chance to form a connection or have chemistry.  The only meeting we had was that initial meeting.  So, you know, I think that if we – if we would have got some time together, my personality would have definitely shined through and I might not have been eliminated, so.

Question:            So when Ben greeted you outside the limo, he seemed to find your double entrance in which you told him you were giving him a second chance at finding love at first sight pretty endearing and cute.  Plus, it became known that Ben appreciates a little corniness anyway.

So it seemed like you guys hit it off at first, but, you know, since you are a game hunter and Ben might have possibly found that a little intimidating or maybe out of his comfort zone or something, you know, how much of a role do you think your hobby played in his decision to eliminate you?

Amber Tierney:                                You know, I'm not sure.  I can see that it could possibly be intimidating, just because it's something that generally is more masculine, maybe.  But, the thing is, is that with hunting and doing that sort of – it's a hobby, so it can definitely be intimidating to some guys.  Not where I'm from.  Guys love that kind of stuff, but I could see where that would be intimidating to him.

Question:            So, in your final words, you said you were upset because your parents felt you had wasted time on something, and this would have been your moment to do something for yourself.  It was something along those lines.

Could you talk a little bit about what you meant by that?  Like, what exactly were they referring to, and is it considered kind of unusual to yourself to kind of put yourself first in a given situation, or what was behind that?

Amber Tierney:                                I think that I was really excited about the experience and I was hoping to learn more about Ben, and I think that my whole family and my friends, they were really excited about the experience and I kind of felt like I sold myself short a little bit.  And I think that, you know, if given another chance, I probably would have been a little bit more assertive in the situation.

But it was more about the experience.  I really wanted to – I thought it was a great opportunity, a great experience, and I didn't really get to have – I wasn't there very long, obviously.

Jennifer Matarese:         Hey, so I know you said you didn’t get like a one-on-one time with Ben, but did you get any chance to talk to him at all?  And what did you get to say to him?

Amber Tierney:                                Actually, I didn't get a chance to talk to him at all.  It was really that initial meeting and then sitting in on – sitting in on him blindfolded, so…

Jennifer Matarese:         You didn’t – I thought you could like strike up a conversation while he was sitting there?

Amber Tierney:                                You know, the thing is that there is – there’s 25 girls, and they are – you know, they are fighting for him and they – you know, everyone's aggressive and everybody, you know, he tries to find time to spend with everybody.

And with kind of the drama going on with Jenna and Monica and that, that kind of took time away from the other girls getting to know him, because he tried to be a mediator in that situation, and so, that's why I think that some of the girls didn't get any time at all.

Jennifer Matarese:         And, looking back, do you wish that maybe, you know, you would have gone up to him while he was talking to somebody else and just like said, you know, some of the girls would say, “oh, can I steal you away for a few minutes” or something like that.  Do you wish you would have done that or do you think it just wasn't meant to be?  Like, if the circumstances would have been right, it would have worked out?

Amber Tierney:                                You know, I think initially there wasn't a whole lot of chemistry, but I think that if we would have had time to sit down and talk to each other, I think that that could have been different.  I do wish that I would have been a little bit more assertive and I would have approached him and tried to have a conversation with him.

But it was – it was a pretty crazy night, and it isn't like me to really go and I guess interrupt and try to, I guess, do something that I wouldn't normally do, because that's not me.  I guess I would normally just – like I'm just not the type of person that would go in there and do something to kind of make myself stand out, whether it’s negative – in a negative way, I guess, so.

Question:            I was just wondering, in observing Ben, what was it that sort of gave you the impression that he was actually looking for a wife?

Amber Tierney:                                In observing him, honestly I guess I didn't get a whole lot of time to really get to know him.  My initial impression was that he was a little bit maybe more into himself or into the drama than he was into getting to know all of the girls really well.

And, like I said, I wasn't there for a whole lot of time.  I wasn't with him, you know, throughout the whole episode or throughout the whole filming, excuse me, so I'm not – I can't – that's kind of an assumption.  You know, that was my observation.

Question:            And do you – from what seen in the girls that he picked, do you think he’s giving the right girls a chance?

Amber Tierney:                                He can only go off of the conversations that he had that night.  You know, the thing with me is – like I said, initially I kind of questioned his intentions and his character for picking Jenna because that seemed to me, if you're looking for a wife, that's not somebody you would choose, somebody that's not very stable and started causing drama already.  But, then again, like I said, I kind of reflected on that, and she was fragile and I'm sure he didn't want to hurt her.  But in looking for a wife, at that point in time, that’s not something that should really matter.  As to, you know, you shouldn't necessarily feel bad about that and you should pick people that you truly could see yourself with.  And so, I don't – I don’t think all of his choices are that – you know, I don't think that – I guess actually what I should say is that in the time he had, he made the best choice that he could.  That's what I should say.

Question:            Hi.  So you did touch on the kind of gimmicks people used earlier in the call.  I was wondering in particular what did you make of Lindzi arriving on her horse and then Brittney arriving with her grandmother?  Were you thinking that was going to give them such an extra edge, or were you just kind of laughing along with it, thinking it was funny?

Amber Tierney:                                You know, with Lindzi riding in on her horse, I thought that was pretty clever.  She definitely deserved that first impression rose.  That was really neat.

You know, they did things that made them really stand out, so they're definitely going to have that extra edge for sure.

Question:            And was there anything that you saw in any of the girls that we maybe didn't see during the show that would make you think they're going to kind of be the ones to watch this season?  Maybe they’re going to be causing a lot of drama or that they’re going to be interesting for us to watch?

Amber Tierney:                                Well, with the – let's see here – you know, I think that I'm a really big fan of Nicki.  I actually – I had a couple of conversations with her, and she was just a genuinely sweet girl.  Though, at the same time, (inaudible) and I think that she'll voice her opinion and what she thinks.

So, if anybody gets in the way of what she wants, I think she'll let it be known how she feels and what she thinks.  At the same time, she seemed like a really, really sweet girl.

With drama, I think you could kind of tell from the first episode, you know, Jenna might be a little bit emotional.  I think Monica will definitely, you know, maybe be the puppet in the situation and she'll be able to play a lot of people for sure.

Question:            OK.  I was wondering, assuming that you are still single currently, is there a previous Bachelor or one of the suitors from The Bachelorette that you would be interested in going out on a date with and getting to know better on a personal level?

Amber Tierney:                                You know, prior to J.P. being picked, and, you know, obviously now getting married, that was somebody that I was a really big fan of.

The other one, and I don't even remember his name.  I think he went on a date with Ashley to – they went to Las Vegas, and I can't remember his name.  But…

Question:            The one (inaudible) got married?  (Inaudible).

Amber Tierney:                                Yes.  Yes.  That date, and it was kind of a joke.  Yes, that – oh, that was William?  Yes, definitely.  He seems like a really nice, down to earth guy, and that's kind of somebody that I'm looking for.

Question:            OK.  And did you witness that whole scene between Monica and Blakely cuddling?  I know you had brought up Monica and Jenna, but you didn’t bring up the Blakely situation.

Amber Tierney:                                Yes.  I did not see that.  I mean, I did watch the episode and I saw it there, but I wasn't there.  When I was there, I did not see them together, so.

Question:            So my first question you’re a successful young woman.  What was – what went behind your decision to participate in The Bachelor?

Amber Tierney:                                You know, there were a couple of different things.  One was that I actually moved to Kansas City and it's really, really hard to date here, and I thought, you know, why not?  Why not try it?  Who knows, I mean, maybe something really good could come out of this.

And the other thing was is the experience, just going in and having fun, having a good time.  I have worked hard my whole life and, you know, I just needed to do something for myself, and I thought the experience would be something that I would truly enjoy.

Question:            And was there ever a point – do you think that other contestants, including yourself, ever get concerned about being – participating in The Bachelor, how it would affect their careers and their future lives afterwards?  Did that ever cross your mind or do you think that crosses people’s minds in general?

Amber Tierney:                                I hope that it wouldn’t cross people’s minds, but, you know, I don't know if it does because it’s like whatever you say, whatever you do can – people can take that how they want to or can (inaudible) or you portrayed or edited in a way that maybe you did not necessarily mean it.

And, the thing is, when you go on something like that, that’s something that you need to realize can happen, and maybe some people don’t, but I would think that everybody would take that into consideration prior to signing up for something like that.

Question:            Hey, Amber.  So a quick question, did you bring – how many dresses did you bring with you for this show?  And did you – you know, how did you pick out your dress for the first night?

Amber Tierney:                                Oh, wow.  I brought a lot of dresses.  It was probably – including like cocktail, it could have been 15 or so.

And then how I picked out my dress, I actually got together with my family.  It was a couple of nights before I left, and we all got together and I tried on a couple of them.  And they really were – they loved the yellow one, and so that's what we had really decided on, was that one.  We just all got together and that was the – that was the crowd favorite, so.

Question:            Very good.  And so – and were the girls at the (inaudible) ceremony, do you guys like critique each other out – you know, (every other) girl’s gowns or how does that work?

Amber Tierney:                                Excuse me.  You know, I’m sure everybody’s kind of like sizing the other person up, looking and saying, “OK, well, you know, what is this girl wearing?  Who is this girl?”  That sort of thing.  So I’m sure that’s what happens.  It’s not something, though, that they’d talk about.  I’m sure it’s something they think.

Question:            We loved seeing you on the show, and now that you have an insight about the process, what do you think about Jenna’s behavior?

Amber Tierney:                                I think that Jenna could have handled the situation a little bit differently.  Like I had mentioned, you know, when I saw her, I was thinking, "Oh, my gosh.  This girl is a hot mess.”  This is ridiculous to get this upset over something.

But, when I look back, I just, you know, also need to take into consideration that it was a long night.  There was some alcohol involved and emotions were high, and she was already upset.  So – but, then again, you know, her coming in mid-Rose Ceremony and getting a rose was definitely disappointing for sure.

Question:            Right.  And since you were there the night of the Rose Ceremony, how do you think Ben felt about her behavior that night?

Amber Tierney:                                Well, the thing is, is that I think that he didn’t probably want to hurt her more.  He already saw that she was upset and maybe didn't want to hurt her anymore.  But I would think that that would be kind of a red flag for him –

Question:            So when Anna stepped out of the limo, she chose to blow right past Ben without saying anything.  What did you think of that entrance, because in Chris Harrison’s blog, he said her move really upset Ben, actually, and that after that she had no chance with him at all.  Do you agree and feel that's what happened?  And would you say you'd feel the same way as Ben if you had been in his shoes?

Amber Tierney:                                No.  You know, I guess I would have kind of looked at it as – you know, the thing is it's kind of a pretentious move, and it’s not something, you know – I guess if he kind of felt that – maybe offended by it, I guess, I could see maybe how he wouldn't want to get to know her better.

But I – you know, I think the thing is, is that everybody kind of makes their entrance.  I don't think that she meant anything by it.  I think it was just something that she did to catch his attention.  But obviously it was what – she wasn’t – obviously she probably shouldn't have done that.

Question:            And besides you and Anna, Dianna, Lyndsie, Holly, Amber B. and Shira all got eliminated as well.  How well did you get to know any of those girls and what were your impressions of them while you were on the show?  And do you have any idea why Ben might have eliminated any of them?

Amber Tierney:                                Let's see here.  The girl that walked by him – what’s her name again?

Question:            Anna.

Amber Tierney:                                OK, Anna.  You know, she did seem slightly pretentious to me, so that could be a reason.  Dianna was kind of meek and she just – she wasn't very outgoing, which could have – could have been a reason why.  She just seemed kind of quiet.  The other one – let’s see here.  I think she was from Kentucky, I believe.

Question:            Holly?

Amber Tierney:                                Holly, yes.  I didn't really get to know the other girls.  I didn't really meet the other girls.  The only two that I had met was Dianna, and that was really when I was sitting there and she had blindfolded him, and then Anna.

Beth Kwiatkowski:           OK.

Amber Tierney:                                Let’s see here.  The one from England…

Question:            Lyndsie?

Amber Tierney:                                Lyndsie.  She – was she eliminated the first night?

Question:            Yes.

Amber Tierney:                                Yes.  No, she seemed like a sweetheart, so I have no idea.  Maybe she didn't get the one-on-one time.  I mentioned earlier that, you know, with all the drama going on, he didn't – there were a handful of girls that he didn't get any one-on-one time with, and that could be a reason, that he didn't get to talk to her, so he had no idea who she was or what she was about, and that's what he had to go off of.

Question:            Sure.  And any thoughts on the other – Amber or Shira?  Amber…

Amber Tierney:                                I don’t think I talked to them at all that night.

Question:            OK.  Sure.  And my last question is I know you might have touched on this a little bit, but just to clarify, you know, how did you end up on The Bachelor?  Did you apply or did someone nominate you?  And also, was it your first time applying for the show?

Amber Tierney:                                Oh, yes.  Yes.  It was my first time doing anything like this.  So, it was not something that I would normally do.  It was actually a friend.  A friend was going.  She was a huge fan and she said, you know, you should go, and I just thought to myself, what do I have to lose?  And I did it, and it was positive from there on out.

Amber Tierney:                                Yes.  Yes.

Question:            So, I just want to know, like, do you have any insight as to why you might have been eliminated?  Like did you think you were forming a connection with Ben or no?  And basically what reasoning do you think went into his decision to let you go so early on?

Coming Up Roses: The Bachelor Blog

Welcome to the WABC's "Coming Up Roses: The Bachelor" blog. This blog is written by WABC employee, Jennifer Matarese, a loyal viewer of "The Bachelor", "The Bachelorette", and "Bachelor Pad" who has been a fan since season 1. We'll watch Ben get a second chance at love!

“The Bachelor” is back!  It’s great to be watching again, even if I thought this season might be little dull, but boy was I wrong!  These ladies make up for any missing charisma from Ben and speaking of Ben, you see his personality really come out!  He’s pretty charming and really seems to put forth a lot of effort when it comes to getting to know each of the ladies.

Ben ladies

The show begins with the usual recap.  We see Ben get dumped again by Ashley on last season’s “Bachelorette”.   Suddenly, we are taken to modern day and we see that Ben has picked himself back up and he’s doing better than ever!  His business is thriving, he’s having fun with friends, and most importantly, he’s ready to love again!

It's finally time for the big premiere of the 16th season of "The Bachelor" with Ben Flajnik.

Bensmiling

Ben was making the rounds today with appearances on "Good Morning America" and "Live with Kelly".  Right after that, he was nice enough to take some time to sit down and talk with me!  He talks all about the drama that first night in the house, his thoughts on his first night jitters, and what viewers will think of him.  Here's his full interview.

"The Bachelor" premieres tonight at 8 p.m. on ABC.  It's a two-hour episode.  I've seen some of it, and believe me, if you thought you might skip this one, don't!  There's enough drama from the ladies that you hardly even need Ben.  Let's hope he can find his match in that group!

Hugs, Kisses & Roses,

Jennifer Matarese

Here is the full transcript of the interview that Ben did the other day.  He talks about his nude scene on the beach where he does a little skinny dipping and tells you a little bit about the mysterious older woman we've been seeing in the previews.  The questions I asked him along with his answers are in PURPLE.

Benbachelor

Question:            Well, I’ll just get to my question.  So, did you find love?  I know you can’t reveal too much.  But tell us about – about that part of the show.

Ben Flajnik:         I, obviously can’t tell you that.  But, you know, I'm happy with my decision in doing – in doing the show.  You know, another good experience, another cathartic therapeutic adventure for me.

At this point in the game, you're guess is as good as good as mine.  Ben Flajnik is being very elusive to whether he found love or not on this season of "The Bachelor".  As always I hope that he did, but you  never can tell!

???Benfinale1

In a conference call interview today he said, "I’m happy with my decision in doing the show, another good experience, a therapeutic adventure for me."  When he was pressed later on, he said he was "happy with the experience".  Hmm.

The big announcement has been made!  The 25 ladies vying for Ben's heart have officially been announced!

This is so sad!  I really thought these two were going to be a "Bachelorette" success story.  A representative for Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez confirm that the pair have called it quits: "Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez have ended their relationship.  As they go through this difficult time, we ask that you respect the couple’s privacy."

Aliandroberto

Wow they really did give it a good solid try though.  They were living together in San Diego and had gotten engaged.  They did postpone their wedding that was supposed to take place in May because Ali got injured, but it appears their issues were more serious than anyone really knew.

In "Us Weekly" they quote some of their friends as saying that the couple was miserable, the relationship was either at an extreme high or extreme low, and that they bring out the worse in each other.  Ouch!  That's never a good thing.  Well, I wish them both lots of luck and hope that they do find their true love one day.

Hugs, Kisses & Roses,

Jennifer Matarese

It's official, Vienna Girardi and Kasey Kahl are back on the market!  They took to Twitter the other night to break the news to their fans:

Kasey-and-vienna

KaseyRKahl: "Yes vienna and I have split. It's been 5 weeks now. I can't fake it anymore. I will always love, be there for her, and wish her the best."

ViennaGirardi: "@KaseyRKahl will always be my best friend, but yes we have split. No idea what the future holds for us but we will always remain friends."

Something tells me they probably won't be best friends.  In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised it Kasey and Jake struck up some kind of bromance in this aftermath!

Here is the full transcript of the conference call interview with Holly from yesterday.  I've highlighted my portion of the call in PURPLE.

Holly
Question:         I guess we want to just start from the beginning and find out when you found out your – you and Michael were both going to be in the house and when you decided to become partners.

Holly Durst:    Michael and I had been asked to be at Bachelor Pad when we were still together.  And then we broke up and then we were asked again and I had nothing to lose at that point, so I did it.  And we decided to be partners a week before going into the house, but that was the first time we had spoken in three months.

Continue reading "Full Transcript of Interview with Holly Durst" »

Michael had a phone malfunction it turns out, so he rescheduled the conference call interview for a little later.  I got to talk to him first, and I asked him what he would do with his winnings.  He said that he plans on going on a vacation within the next month, maybe to the Caribbean, anywhere that Blake and Holly aren’t around, and taking some time to hit the reset button on himself.  He also said that he planned on giving 10% to his church as he always does with his money.

Michaelstagliano
I then asked him if he would ever be interested in becoming “The Bachelor” because, let’s face it, we want him to find love!  He said that while some people may hesitate and say that they don’t know, he said, “Yes, absolutely,” he thinks it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to travel the world and meet 25 amazing women.  Let’s start the campaign now “Michael for The Bachelor”!

Holly Durst one of the winners of this year's "Bachelor Pad" spoke to reporters in a conference call today about her big win.  Michael Stagliano was supposed to take part in the second part of the call, but something happened and he was unavailable, so I hope to bring that to you at a later time!  Either they couldn't do the call together or they didn't want to, because they were each supposed to take their own separate turns with the call, instead of doing it together.

Holly
Holly said that she and Michael were asked to be on the show when they were still together, and then they broke up, and the producers called and asked them again.  She says they decided to go on and about a week before taping began they decided they should partner up.

Is Judgment Day coming May 21st?

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- Eyewitness News explored Judgment Day and why many people think it's coming on May 21st.

On a religious mission, George Finn is out spreading the word.

"God has led me through like this incredible journey," Finn said.

As the side of his RV proclaims, Judgment Day is coming soon.

"People will see the rising up of the true believers wherever it may be," Finn said.

Finn's belief is what Harold Camping, a Christian broadcaster and author, has been preaching.

"When May 21st comes in any city, any area of the world, about 6 p.m. there is going to be the beginning of Judgment Day," Camping said, "It's going to be an earthquake that the whole world will know instantly that Judgment Day has begun."

The word is spreading as Camping's "Family Radio Network" sends out caravans.

One of them is moving up the east coast carrying a belief that other religious leaders find seriously flawed.

"The reason he gives us a day is so that we can be urgent or instant, in season or out of season, so that we will always live our lives as if today was the last day. How many of us really do that? So, picking a day is always counterproductive," said Dan Stratton, a pastor.

Dan Stratton is pastor and co-founder of Faith Exchange in TriBeCa.

The bible, he and others believe, has numerous references to the Judgment Day or rapture as it's sometimes called, but just no specific date.

"Folks who pick dates, they end up betraying their followers because they are wrong, time and time again," Stratton said.

Camping though, claims his calculations projecting the Judgment Day come from one source.

"Everything had to come from the bible. It could not come by a dream or a vision or a voice," Camping said.

"We're not supposed to bring fear. We're not supposed to bring dread, and we are certainly not supposed to bring irresponsibility to where our people are just not doing what they're supposed to do coming into the day," Stratton said.

As George Finn and other believers tried to hand out brochures, others expressed their mixed feelings.

"I don't think we know when it's going to come. I don't think you can calculate, it's just going to happen," a person on the street said.

But it also raises the question how George Finn is preparing, spending some of his money to buy the RV to spread the word.

"It's a privilege for me to be doing what I am doing, but it doesn't mean I've been saved," Finn said.

"When people ask me what to do I say, 'Pray, pray, pray,'" Camping said.

Praying over what has yet to come.
